Pupils will be reciting their Burns Poetry on Tues – I cannot wait to hear them, they have been working so hard on these!

Their Scots Person from the Enlightenment project/presentation is for Feb 9th but I am aware many are complete so we may see some sooner.

This week in Maths and Numeracy we are working on revision of division with the written method e.g. 4/2576 and we are consolidating Measure (Length, area, volume and Weight)

Homework is for Monday 5th Feb and Pupils have a green maths homework jotter and a pink literacy homework jotter.

Literacy homework – re write the passage correctly using a dictionary to correct the spelling – correctly spelled words may be written in colour or underlined.  Please encourage quality presentation for homework.

Primary 3 Homework – Week from 23^rd January

We are starting to get ready for our Scottish Assembly on 2^nd February. Hopefully letters made it home last week about parents and family being able to come in and watch that.

Numeracy

Everyone made a great start with Sum Dog last week, despite my mix-up! I have set a new challenge one for this week.

In class we are working on the “columns” method for addition.

Our golden rules have been:

• When you write out a sum, make sure the numbers are lined up on top of each other in the correct columns.
• Always start working from the units.
• When you are adding, don’t forget the numbers that have jumped over.
• Sometimes you need to make another column to finish the sum.

Scottish Poems

The children are doing very well learning their Scots poems. The school competition has moved back to Thursday 1^st February, but our P3 heats will be on Thursday 25^th.

Children who do not want to perform in front of an audience will not have to, but it is still important to learn and practise the poem as this is a useful skill to develop.

We are nearly finished working through the 100 most common English words. (You can search for Fry’s 100 to find out more.) For this week please could we practise:

As usual, please could the children work through the lists using our “look, say, cover, write and check” method, then use the words to write some sentences.

Primary 7 all have reading homework this week as well as the expectation for ALL to learn their Burns poem.  Pupils have been making some personal targets in Maths and writing so that they can make small steps to progress. They have their test this week on Fractions, decimals and percentages and should continue to revise this as well as all their times tables/division stories.  We are working on Algebra and negative numbers this week.

P7 Maths Homework

We have revised our class charter and have the 3 rules to be SAFE, READY and RESPECTFUL.  Ask pupils what these mean.  Our main focus this week is to be ready – not late, have proper resources, ready to listen and learn.

As the final part of Scottish month we will look at The Enlightenment period and pupils will have a famous Scot to research and present on – this will go towards Listening and Talking assessment.  They will be given time to start this research at school and are lucky to have access to a well resourced local library after school if need be.

Primary 3 Homework – Week from 16^th January

This term our spelling homework will change slightly, focusing on common words. We will still work through sounds in class. In numeracy we will finish probability and move back to addition and subtraction. Around the school Scottish month also continues. The children are making maps of the country and will learn some poems for a school competition.

Learnits – New flashcards came home last week and the old ones are also still relevant.

Sum Dog – This is an online platform for practising maths skills. I am hoping it will be familiar to many of you from last year. Login details will come home today, but if you need a reminder at any point then just let me know.

Each week I will set a challenge on Sum Dog which focusses on relevant skills. The children will have a go in class this week, which should get them back in the way of it.

To access on a computer you login at www.sumdog.com. To access on a tablet or phone you can either go through that site in your web browser or download the Sum Dog app. The new 3D app enables a few more games, but 2D should still work.

Scottish Poems

The children have all chosen one of three Scottish poems to bring home and learn. We will also practise these in class, with two from our class going forward to represent P3 in a school competition on Thursday 25^th January.

While many of the children will relish this opportunity to perform, others may find it nerve-wracking! In class our practice will be non-threatening. No-one will have to recite in front of the class if they do not feel comfortable. Having said that, being able to memorise and recite something is a useful life skill, and so even if your child is not keen on the competition element of this, please do encourage them to learn and say their poem.

This week in P7 we are having an intensive revision week where we will be doing a lot of mental maths to consolidate square numbers, division, times tables, problem solving etc.  Mrs Caldwell has delayed her test until next Monday so pupils have an extra week to revise the fractions, decimals and Percentages tables they have been working on.  They will be expected to know the fraction, decimal and related percentages (e.g. 50%, 0.5, 1/2)

Pupils all have reading homework but there is no other homework because I have given out a choice of Burns poems for them to choose one to recite on 30/1/18.  I gave them 16 minutes to learn 1 verse and most were successful – this means they have ample time to learn the whole poem if they use time wisely. (Ae fond kiss, Address to the Deil or Adddress to the toothache – some have challenged themselves to learn Tan O Shanter)

In Scots week we have been looking at Scotland’s landscape, natural disasters and plate tectonics.

Now that it is 2018 I have a few dates for you (some parents and pupils have been asking me)

26th June – P7 night in school, usually a DVD and pizza

27th June – P7 Leavers Assembly – Afternoon

28th June – P7 DAY out (ORGANISED BY P7 PARENTS, Previously I have assisted by giving out surveys a parent has made which gives pupils a choice for a day out – often discussed by parents via class facebook, the school can also get costs for buses.  Parent council allocated £15 per pupil for this FULL day to include outing and food)

29th Last day of term – previously parents have organised a piper to be outside the classroom as they leave – photo opportunity etc.

Last year I made an autograph book with the class which they loved, they were about £4 each so this may be something we do again

Primary 3 Homework – Week from 9^th January

Happy New Year! I hope you all had fun and restful holidays.

As well as getting straight back into maths and literacy, January is Scottish month at LPS. This will be our focus for the first few weeks of term before we move onto our next big topic.

Numeracy

We are beginning this term by thinking about probability.

To start with the children will be getting used words like “likely” and “unlikely”, and thinking about how we make these kinds of judgements about events in the future.

We will then move on to a more mathematical understanding of probability, thinking about tossing coins and rolling dice.

If you can talk about these ideas at home, that will help the children to become more familiar with the ideas and words.

We will also be starting up our Big Maths this week, with a new set of Learnits. Flashcards for these will be coming home so that children can practice for the weekly Beat That challenges. Remember that the aim of this is instant recall of these basic number facts. If children have to work out the answers that will not be fast enough.

Pages from class books to be read at home will be written down in the grids like last term. Occasionally I may write a question on these grids for you as a parent, asking for feedback about the reading.
