Hope you all had a lovely September weekend.

Spelling

Following the recent assessment that the class undertook I have identified a few sounds and spelling rules that the children need to revise. Therefore for the next few weeks the children will be given largely the same spelling words and sounds to learn.

After the areas to be revises have been covered in class we will resume with Spelling Made Easy and the children will merge back into their groups.  This week and next: all children are learning when to use ck or k to end a word.

Primary 3 Homework – Week Beginning 18^th September

I hope everyone had a good September weekend.

Our first project has been in science, looking at the human body. We have been investigating how blood carries oxygen and nutrients. We even acted this out! Next we will learn about our five senses.

Numeracy – Big Maths

You may remember Learnits from last year. These are number facts that pupils need to know as quick as a flash! In class we say it should be like when someone asks your name – you don’t need any time to think, you just know.

Our Learnits for this term are:

10 x table                    7 + 4 = 11

8 + 4 = 12                    9 + 4 = 13

8 + 3 = 11                    9 + 3 = 12

The adding sums also have their associated “fact families”.

Coming home this week are Learnit flashcards so everyone can practise. Please can these stay at home for regular use throughout the term. Each Friday the children will have a quickfire Learnit challenge, trying to beat their own scores from the previous weeks.

Reading

Pages to be read from class reading books will be written down onto the grids as usual. If children finish these books, please do still hear some pages out loud.

Thanks also for making a start with the Home Reading Logs. It is interesting and useful to see what everyone has been enjoying!

As well as our usual look, say, cover, write and check (twice for each word) try making a wordsearch using this week’s words. See if anyone at home can solve the puzzle! (I will stick wordsearch grids into the homework jotters.)

Reading Homework Only.

I began a bit of spelling assessment this week and am currently looking at the groups that the children are in and the sounds they are learning. So I appreciate your patience over spelling homework until after the holiday.

I had intended to put out some alternative spelling words this week for the class to do but as the September weekend is upcoming I changed my mind.

Therefore, there is only reading homework for the children to do this week.

The children will have a note of this in their reading records. Some children had to bring home a paper-book mark with their pages/ chapters for reading as they have already lost their reading records, please check at home for these.

Numeracy

For a few more weeks we are going to maintain our focus on the basics of number order and addition / subtraction. Please could I therefore ask you to keep on playing  +1 / -1 ,  +2 / -2  and  +10 / -10.

• How many in a row can you get right?

We have also been thinking about how numbers are made up of hundreds, tens and units. A helpful game online for revising this would be:

Reading

Hearing children read out loud is very valuable. Even ten minutes on this each evening will boost skills and confidence.

Pages to read from class books will continue to be marked. As we try to read lots during the day, however, it may be that the children are finishing these books in school. If that happens, it is still great to hear pages from them read out loud.

We would also encourage children to read their own books at home. To keep a record of this, new Personal Reading Logs have been enclosed this week for the coming term.

A great method is to look, say, cover, write and then check each word. This is how we will practise in class. Please try to practise each word twice in this way.

Try to make up a sentence that uses three of the words from this week’s list. Don’t forget capital letters and full stops!

Numeracy

Play +1 / -1 with someone at home. (To play, write +1 and -1 on opposite sides of a piece of paper so that one of these is showing face up. The first player says a number, and then the second player has to say back the number that is either +1 or -1, depending on which side of the paper is showing. After every five or six numbers, flip the paper over.)

If you want more of a challenge, play +2 / -2 or even +10 / -10!

How many can you get right in a row?

Can you play the game faster and faster?

Challenge the adults in your house!

Play an addition game on a computer or tablet (e.g. http://www.arcademics.com/games/alien/alien.html). Start with sums up to 12, and then see if you can go up to 20.

Reading

Everyone has a new reading book this week, with a note of pages to be read in time for reading groups in class on Thursday 7^th and Tuesday 12^th September.

Reading pages out loud is very helpful. Can you pick a page to practise, and then read it out with no mistakes and lots of expression?
