We hope that everyone is enjoying the last of our summer, we love Autumn so look forward to lots of autumnal adventures this term 🍂.

🔤 Phonics – This week we are not learning any new sounds.  We have learned the sounds s,a,t,p,i,n and are having a focus on segmenting and blending words using magnetic boards as well as trying to write them.  There are lots of words you can make with the first 6 sounds e.g. pin, sat, tin, nip, tan, sin, tap etc.  In class we will be saying the words out slowly and seeing if we can hear the 3 sounds in them then making or writing them.

We are also identifying initial sounds e.g. what sound can you hear first in the word tap?  These skills are tricky and and practise at home would be amazing.  We have provided some green sound cards for you to use.

📖 Reading

Please continue to support your child to learn their key words and read every night.  we will have a book for mon/Tues and a new one for wed/Thurs.

🧮 Maths/Number

We are continuing to count to 20, forwards and back.  We are also sequencing and ordering numbers so children can gain an understanding of quantity and where a number is placed on a number line.  We love using this game in class

We are also discussing which numbers come before, after and between numbers within 20 and learning to write numbers correctly.

⭐Other info

Please can you provide a photo of your family, pets etc (please see previous post) this will help make our home corner more meaningful.

We are also looking for junk for junk modelling.

❕ NO TOYS TO BE BROUGHT IN TO SCHOOL

PLEASE CAN CHILDREN ALL HAVE A CHANGE OF SHOES IN SCHOOL

📷In P1 we aim to make our learning environment a place that children feel safe and secure.  We would like to include some photos around our space that our children can use in discussions etc.  If possible, please could you send in a couple of photos, if you only have digitals feel free to email them to the school and we can print them out.

This week in Primary 1 we will be continuing our learning about The Lighthouse keepers lunch and Zones of Regulation. 😊

Polite reminders:

  • Water only in water bottles (no juice), we are a health promoting school 💧
  • Children need to come to school in outdoor shoes and have shoes with them for gym which they change into.  They usually leave a pair in school. 👟
  • There are many back to school bugs going round, If you are able to pick up a box off tissues for our classroom tissue bank then we would be so grateful – we go through lots! 🤧
  • Junk modelling – we are looking for some recycling to use for junk modelling.  Please ensure these are clean and dry. 🎁

✏ In Literacy we will finish set 1 sounds by learning “p” and “n”.  Once the children learn these sounds we can begin to try blending CVC words from our sounds (s,a,t,i,p,n = sit, nip, sat, tap, pit and so many more) You will receive some of these sounds on cards to cut out and build words with at home.  Magnetic words or bathtime alphabets etc are all fun ways to support at home.

Please continue to home learning booklet – 2 pages each week.  trace the sound and write on your own to the end and then colour the picture.  Fabulous work last week!

Key words – you have been given key words on red card.  These should be cut out and popped in a box to be used both in school and home.  These are stage 1 key words (mum, dad, a, the, Biff,  Chip, Kipper, and, Floppy) and must be known at sight before the children can move from wordless books.  Mrs Beattie and Miss Waller will be looking at key words knowledge this week with groups.

📗 Continue to read each day with your child, this is so so important.

🔢 In Numeracy and Maths we are continuing our counting to 20 and linking numeral to number, numbers before and after and in between as well as counting backwards.  We will also be looking at shape naming and shapes in the world around us.

⭐️ What an amazing first week our Primary 1 learners have had.

🤾 PE days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Children should keep gym shoes and a PE kit in school. Please note that trainers are recommended for indoor/gym shoes as plimsolls are not as sturdy for P.E.

💧Please note children should bring a water bottle and snack every day. Children should only have water in their bottles, not juice, thank you.

🏫  Learning 

📝 Phonics: Last week we introduced two letters; s and a and this wee we will learn t and i. We use Jolly Phonics songs to learn a story and action for each letter sound. See if you can do the sound and action at home. Soon we will know S, A, T, P, I and N. With these 6 letters we can spell lots of words!

🔟  Numeracy:

  • We are learning to count out amounts and order/sequence numbers to 10. It is really important that your child can recognise numerals to 10 and count forwards/backwards from any given number (e.g. start at 3, stop at 9).
  • We are learning to match amounts to numerals (e.g. ****=4) and write them

📗 Home Learning 

Phonics:  Please complete the ‘t’ and ‘i’ worksheet this week and return the booklet to school on Friday. Support your child to form their letters correctly all the way along the lines and colour the matching picture neatly. If they want to keep practising they can try to write words and the letter around the picture.

📚 Reading: Last week, the children were introduced to the ORT characters (Kipper, Biff etc.) and this week they will bring home wordless books and key words.

  • The wordless books come with a separate sheet which is used by the adult to read the story and prompt discussions.  this should be done each night and hopefully the children will talk more and more about the pictures on each page when they read them later in the week after the previous discussions.
  • Key words – please cut these out and use as flash cards for children to learn

Children should bring in a small tub, to be kept in their book bag, for their key words. These words need to be learned and the children need to be able to read them all before they can move onto books with words.

Please note, wordless books are so important for developing key reading skills and they promote amazing discussions.

📗  Book bags are available from the school office. Book bags, diaries and reading books should be brought to school every day.

⭐️ Hello to our new Primary 1 families. We will use our school website to update you on any news and information. You may want to bookmark our school website to check the P1 section weekly.

We have had an amazing start to the school year and are really impressed with how each pupil has settled and adapted into our routine and environment.

✉️ You will receive an envelope with various forms inside, it is really important these are filled in and returned ASAP.

🥪 Pupils will receive a packed lunch this week. From next week we will follow the Midlothian school dinner menu and packed lunches will be available to request in advance for Fridays.

📗 It is always useful for children to have a named book bag. If you wish to purchase one then they are available from the school office. These are helpful to hold and letters, reading books and home learning.

👕 Finally, we would be so grateful if all items of uniform etc are named. This limits lost property and helps our classroom run smoothly.

P1 Week Beginning 5.6.23

Hi all,

Learning Trio forms will be sent home on Friday 9th June. 

This week is Health Week and we have lots of exciting things planned, please see below! Children can come to school this week in sporty clothes as we will be taking parts in lots of activities. Please note no football tops or crop tops such be worn.

Monday – Sports Day 1pm – 3:15pm.

Parents are welcome to watch. We have t-shirts for the children to wear but if your child would rather wear their own house coloured t-shirt then this is fine.

Red – Gladhouse, Green – Dryden, Blue – Edgelaw.

Tuesday – Your child can scoot/cycle to school and get breakfast from 8:30am in the dining hall.

We also have a dance class and first aid course. Children can also take part in a bike course if they bring their bike to school.

Wednesday – We have football, P.E and a music class.

Thursday – We have P.E. and a Treasure Hunt.

IMPORTANT – As the weather is getting warmer, I am encouraging children to bring hats and suncream to help us stay protected from the sun. Please ensure your child has a labelled bottle of suncream and I can help them apply this throughout the day if needed.

This week we will be looking at how we look after ourselves and keep ourselves healthy/safe. 

Homework

Reading: Please get in touch if you have lost any key words and I can replace them for you. Lots of parents were asking about reading groups at learning trios and I wanted to explain that the children can move groups and they are grouped by their progress in reading. If I had any concerns with your child’s reading, I would have communicated this with you. Your children are still very young and only at the start of their reading journey, please don’t worry about what stage or group your child is in.

Spelling: Your child has to read the sentence and then spell the missing word, as shown by the picture beside the sentence. It is good practise to get your child to copy the sentence underneath. This helps to encourage great handwriting.

Hi all,

We are going to the National Museum tomorrow (Wed 24th)  for a little look around and a STEM workshop. Please ensure your child is in school uniform with a snack, water bottle and packed lunch. If you ticked a school packed lunch on the form, then you will receive one. 

Maths – We are starting to learn about the names and properties of 2D and 3D shapes. 

Literacy – We are learning how to use the joining word ‘but’ in our sentences.

Thank you to everyone who managed to join us for our second last Stay and Play on Friday. As always, it was wonderful to see you all and get a chance to share lots of learning! 

Thursday – We are going to be going to the Link on Thursday afternoon to do some gardening and have a chance to explore loose parts. 

Homework

Reading: Lots of children can’t move onto their next stage books because they have not learned their key words. Please help your child to learn these when reading. As always, pages to be read will be written in their green reading record. If you need any extra copies of key words, or think you might be missing some, then please get in touch.
