๐ŸŽ‡ P1 News and info – 2/11/2020 ๐ŸŽ†

Can you believe November is here? It has been such a strange but quick year!

This week in P1 we will continue to work on our sounds which are “u” and “l”.ย  Pupils are learning to use these to build CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant) such as cat, rat, mat, hat etc.ย  This is an activity they can do at home using their green sounds cards.

Reading books for the week are sent home on Monday (Monday: half the book, Tues: other half, Wed: whole book, Thurs: whole book with pictures covered or activity). Please continue to learn the stage 1 and 2 words

Numeracy: We are looking at the number before and after within 10 as well as number pairs that make 10.

Ideas to try at home:

  1. Show me 6 fingers, can you show me it in another way? – can you do it without looking t your fingers/hands in the air?
  2. Can you count back from 7 to 0, can you count to 10 from 4?etc.
  3. Find 10 objects, group them and discuss number stories. e.g. There are 3 leaves and if I add 7 I make 10.

Continuing with people who help us, we are looking at The Emergency Services and how to make a 999 call etc.ย  We are also looking at harmful and helpful substances.

  • Look out for “report cards” on Tuesday
  • Milk money to be paid by Wednesday
  • Christmas Cards and order forms should be out on Friday
  • Pupils should bring outdoor clothing, layers and gloves etc. If wearing wellies, pupils can bring a change of footwear as long as they have non slip, hard soles and the child can put them on and secure them themselves.๐Ÿ‚

๐ŸŽƒP1 news and info 27/10/20

I hope everyone had a very well rested time off school and are looking forward to the term ahead.ย  This is always my favourite term and season of the year so I look forward to some fun learning, which will take on a very 2020 twist but enjoyable all the same.

Pupils will come home again with their reading books.ย  I only update yellow books on a Monday but children should do reading every night

Monday – half the book

Tuesday – the other half

Wed – whole book

Thurs – Whole book with pictures covered.

I am so proud of the P1 because they have worked so hard to learn their sounds and key words in school and at home, thanks for your support with this, it really does make all the difference.

Halloween – please remember children must not bring in items from home.ย  We will do some Halloween activities in school this week but no fancy dress etc.

๐Ÿ‚ Primary 1 – 8th October 2020 ๐Ÿฆ”

With just over a week to go until the October break I cannot believe how fast time has flown. ๐Ÿ‚

Reading groups are heard almost daily but groups timings are limited to just 10-15 minutes in school with close teacher contact so it is essential that pupils keep reading their books daily in school.

Reading journals are updated on Mondays and that will be the only day that I collect them all in. ๐Ÿ“’

I have handed out the Stage 1 words (pink) and stage 2 words (yellow) today because I realise that adding the words each time we get a new book is perhaps not the best idea in the current climate.ย  These words should be learned at sight and shouldย  be learned in order to progress through the ORT scheme.ย  These are for home use so do not need to be brought in. ๐ŸŸฅ ๐ŸŸจ

On Friday I will hand out the sounds that we will have covered by the October holiday.ย  In class each day we go through the sounds and are not word building using these.ย  e.g. asking the children to lay out the sound cards to make a certain word and then sound it out.ย  This activity is extremely useful for confidence building and would ideally be completed alongside reading at home. ๐ŸŸฉ

Can I also take this opportunity to ask that the Phonics booklet that pupils were handed out in week 2 is completed and up to date.

I will begin target setting with pupils next week and their target sheets will come home once they have had their chat with me.

As always, thanks for your support

๐ŸŒˆ22nd September – P1 News and informationโญ๏ธ

๐ŸŽI hope everyone is well rested after their long weekend, I think everyone needed at least one ling lie, I know I did.๐Ÿ

This week our sounds are h and r, you can find the jolly phonics short songs clips on youtube, I am sure the children would love to perform them for you.

๐ŸŽฏPlease remember to complete the Phonics homework book each week – this should be completed to r by this Friday.

๐Ÿ“’ Most groups will have reading this week on Wednesday, please can bookbags and diaries come to school daily.

SEESAW – A couple of families have not yet accessed SEESAW, the feedback has been so positive about seeing your child’s learning journey so far, if you still need assistance please email me k.hinton@mgfl.net and I can email you the invite code for your child.

I have also set a short task on SEESAW for you to try if you wish (instructions and task are in the activities section), it discusses our RED ZONE ๐Ÿ˜ก and requires some discussion and using the app to note responses.ย  It is meant to be quite engaging and quick and useful for as all to play around with the app incase ofย  a time where more online activities will be required. ๐Ÿ’ป

๐Ÿ’‚๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐Ÿ‘ท๐ŸปPEOPLE WHO HELP US is our topic and it is usually a really fun one as we can have visitors and great discussions around the topic.

This week I would like children to try and find a “person who helps us” and get a photo of themselves with that person (e.g. a family member who works in a shop (in uniform), lollipop lady, childminder etc).ย  Basically everyone helps someone and it would be nice to have photos of children with a variety of helpers.

Obviously, keep within the COVID guidelines but this is why I suggested a family member or standing beside a vehicle or building associated with people who help us.ย  Be creative ๐Ÿ™‚ Also if you have relevant photos in your albums already these would be great to use too.

These can be emailed to me at k.hinton@mgfl.net.๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿš’ ๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿป

NUMBER – We are working hard to recognise number words and matching them to numerals.ย  We are counting to and from 10 and adding numbers to make 10.

GENTLE REMINDER – We are not permitted to change shoes or clothes so come dressed for activities on Thursday.ย  WATER ONLY in water bottles unless this is just for lunch. WE ARE A NUT FREE SCHOOL, THIS INCLUDES NUTELLA.

Many thanks

PRIMARY 1 INFORMATION – 14th September 2020

Hi P1 parents,

We have a short couple of weeks as it is the September weekend this Friday/Monday so I hope you all have a lovely and restful time.

This week not everyone will have reading sent home but everyone will have Key words to practise – If you have misplaced these then you can download a set here – STAGE 1 AND 2 SIGHT WORDS

Pupils look at the shape of the word and memorise it, this is initial stages of reading and they will not be able to sound out all the words.

We are also learning numbers 1-10 – recognising numerals, amounts and words while counting out numbers and showing numbers on fingers etc.ย  Any reinforcement of this at home would be such a great support for them. Some examples of reinforcing number are below.

e.g. “How many are there here?”

“Can you show me 7 fingers? How about making 7 in another way?”

“Count out 6 grapes, are there 6 there? add one “how many are there now?”

Most of you have had a look on SeeSaw and I hope you have enjoyed seeing our learning journeys.

โญ๏ธPrimary 1 8th September 2020โญ๏ธ

Primary 1 have been very busy learning our new sounds (this week the sounds are c, ck and e) and using these to build some words.ย  We have been looking at numbers within 10, recognising these as numerals, amounts and words and counting with fingers. ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿป

Please continue to keep up to date with completion of the phonics workbook at home.โœ๏ธ

๐Ÿ“• Reading – I am trying to minimise the contact with reading books/journals.ย  Reading books go into “quarantine” for 72 hours before being re distributed but for reading journals I am going to try to update these weekly with intended reading for the week.ย  Most groups have 1 or 2 books a week and reading should be done each night along with learning the word cards.ย  The letter sent out today should help with outlining how we do early reading and some support you could give at home.ย  We are just in the early stages and learning to read page numbers, explore pictures and spot key words is our focus – children will memorise as per the pictures and this is totally normal and expected in the early reading process.

๐Ÿงพ I would like to get the Seesaw letters out to parents this week so you can create and account to see some photos of our classroom and our learning.ย  If you have not handed it back yet then I will be sending another out on Thurs – or you can find a copy of the letter in the website post from the second week.

โ• A gentle reminder that we are a nut free school and that water bottles should only have water in them.

Primary 1 Week beginning 31st of August

The pupils have been enjoying using the Zones of Regulation to help them to discuss their emotions and where they feel they are throughout the day,ย  they used this language in nursery and talk very well about their “zone”.ย  There is no negative zone – because emotions are natural, but we talk about the optimum for learning as green and strategies to help get back onto green so they are ready to learn ๐Ÿ™‚

This week I will be sending out some books which go over the names of the ORT characters and the first key words.ย  I have also included flash cards for each child to use at home to learn the words as well.

Pupils should read at home each night – discuss the story and the pictures, look at the words, point out and find words, follow the words with their reading finger.ย  Flashcards will be sent home for each new stage of the reading books, these should be used regularly to help consolidate learning if possible.

Pupils are learning numbers 1-10 and how to write them, playing games with 2 dice or dominoes will help them to count and recognise numbers and practising formation on numbers would be another worthwhile activity – this is what we have been working on this week.

I have sent home a letter requesting permission to use seesaw app for learning journaling, if this has not been returned I would appreciate if this could be done ASAP. click the link to download seesaw letter or email permission to k.hinton@mgfl.net.

Many thanks

Mrs Hinton

P1 News and Information 25th August

Dear Parents/Carers,

We had a busy week last week and the class are settling into the routine of primary 1.ย  Mrs Black is not with us this week so we have some lovely nursery ladies in to help each day which will be lovely for us.

We are looking at The Zones of Regulation and emotions this week with a look at “The colour monster” book to help children understand their emotions and come up with strategies to get them back to “green-calm and ready to learn.”

I have not sent reading books home yet because I have been thinking of the safest way to have homework coming back and forward from school to home etc.ย  Other classes use Google Classroom but I do not feel this is suitable for us just now – I will send information home about Seesaw this week – it is an app like learning journals where we can share learning and information, I would like us to use this in P1 as an extension of our classroom as I know it is hard with you being unable to come inside etc.

This week, choose a book your child loves and talk about being ready to read – how to hold books, gently turn pages, use a finger to follow words right to left etc.ย  Ask the child to recognise some letter sounds that we have done and talk about reading pictures ๐Ÿ™‚

Our sounds this week are “t” (Monday) and “i” (Wednesday) and next week we will be working on “p” and “n”. Pupils have a jolly phonics workbook they can work on at home.ย  In the current climate can this be kept at home and worked on weekly and returned when guidance allows us or when complete?ย  It is important to work at the same pace as school – Usually 2 sounds a week (pupils learn to write and recognise the sound, say the song with action, colour the picture and either practise writing the sound or words with the sound in it around the picture – in pencil if possible).

In numeracy we are looking at writing letters 1-5 and recognising numbers in “dots” – like dominoes, up to 10.ย  This could be a fun game to play at home or make your own poster.
