Primary 3 Homework – Week from 24th October
I hope you all enjoyed the holiday week. The Buchans had a good time getting settled with baby Alice.
In numeracy we are moving on to multiplication. Our new big topic will be beginning soon, so watch this space!
Best wishes,
Mr Buchan
Numeracy
The 10 x table has already been in our “Learnits”, and now we are going to include the 5 x table too. Flashcards for this will come home to add into your sets for regular practice.
Hit the Button is a great online game for revising times tables and building up speed. Speed matters because our aim in P3 is to work towards instant recall of these basic number facts.

Under “Times Tables” you can choose 2, 5 or 10 and then play either “Hit the Answer” or “Hit the Question”.
Reading
Pages to be read from class reading books will be written down in the grids as usual. If you can hear some of these out loud that is excellent practice. It is also great to ask questions as you listen, helping the children to engage with the stories and also checking that they understand any trickier words. (You may well do this already!)
Literacy
In our writing lessons we talk about “VCOP”. This stands for vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation. By building up our skills in these four areas we can make our writing more interesting.
At home this week, try to find examples of exciting and interesting vocabulary. This could be from a newspaper or magazine, something online, or a book you’ve been reading for fun. Copy the words into your homework jotter and use them in a sentence. Can you find at least three good ones?
We especially like finding new ways of saying ordinary things. For example, instead of saying that the man walked down the street, we might say that he crept, stomped or ambled.
Spelling
Spelling words to practice this week are:
chin chat
much march
pinch chip
they where
use there
Please could everyone do the usual look, say cover, write and check (twice through the list) and then write sentences using as many of the words as possible.
Monday 23rd October
Please READ, COVER, WRITE, CHECK words twice.
Choose one activity from the sheet at the front of your jotter.
Complete the sheet.
For Monday 30th October
Primary 1 Homework
Welcome back after the October break – I hope you all had a restful time. This term is a busy one – plenty of learning and other exciting activities too.
A warm welcome to Mrs Ashley Beechman, a PGDE teaching student, she will be working with us for the next five weeks.
Homework
Phonics: the three sounds as indicated in the sheet given out before half term: L, F and B.
Reading: Please continue to read daily with your child and to support them to learn the words in their word tin.
Numeracy: We are continuing with the number after and number before – please help your child by asking them what the number before 10 is, the number after 7 etc – if your child can do this confidently within 10 then move to numbers within 20 or beyond.
Our PE days will stay the same – please make sure your child has a T-shirt and shorts in their gym bag.
Topic: We will be doing a novel study called the ‘The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomlinson – this will incorporate investigating day and night.
This term we will also begin learning the songs and parts for the nativity – more information to follow.
EXCITING EVENT: Halloween Disco (organised by the parent council) Thursday 26th October – music, fun and games, arts and crafts.

Welcome back after the October break. Here’s looking forward to the next nine weeks of this new term. It’s going to be packed full of exciting activities and learning opportunities!
Homework info:
Spelling – I will send home a new 6 week spelling grid on Tuesday. The sound focus this week is ck.
Reading – Reading continues as usual. Please send in your child’s book bag daily.
Numeracy – We will continue to work on ‘doubles and halves’ this week. In particular, children should learn 6 + 6, 7 + 7, 8 + 8, 9 + 9 and 10 + 10.
I have set a Sumdog challenge for those who wish to take part. This is called ‘P2 Half and Double Challenge’. The questions this week, focus on odd/even numbers and halves and doubles. I note that some questions ask 7 x 2 or 3 x 2 which is a format we have not formally used yet but I will go over this in class this week.
Class News
That’s all for now!
Thanks for your support,
Ms S Brunt
Camp Info that went home 13/10/17 (Pink Letter) Oct Camp Info
It was lovely to meet so many of you again at Parents Consultations this week. Many of you are requesting additional homework and I suggestthat pupils revise multiplication, mental addition and subtraction up to (4 digit numbers), telling the time both analogue and digital and money (budgeting). I send out maths homework most weeks.
As well as reading for 20-30 mins each night, it would be advantageous for pupils to also revise common word lists and if they are secure with these then the most commonly mis-spelled words.
Pupils have homework due on 23rd October. This is an activity grid based on WONDER. Their answers should be high level and quote the text as evidence. They are worth up to 10 house points per question and I have high expectations. This was issued on 8/10/19
We have been made aware of a French High School transition test where pupils will be tested on listening and writing in French. They are expected to know basic French for conversation for speaking and writing. We have revised this every year and have worked on it this month. Some pupils asked for revision to give them a good grounding for the test (next month) I put this pack together.
There are also many fabulous French apps such as Duolingo which have been proven to improve French – even just by doing 5 minutes per day.
Primary 3 Homework – Week Beginning 9th October
I’m not in class this week because Baby Buchan has decided to put in an early appearance. Apologies!
There is slightly less homework in this final week before the October break. I hope you all have a good rest.
Best wishes,
Mr Buchan
Numeracy
On Mondays with Mrs Wallace the children have been learning about time and clocks. Please look for opportunities to reinforce this at home by:
Reading
The children will finish their class reading books in school on Thursday so there will not be any set reading coming home.
Having said that, please do encourage the children to keep on reading every day. If you are able to hear them out loud as well, that is enormously valuable.
Literacy
We have begun to learn how to look up words in the dictionary. If you have a dictionary at home, try writing down three unusual words and challenging the children to find them. As all dictionaries are slightly different, you will need to choose some good words that are in yours.
If you do not have a dictionary at home (in this digital age) there are class ones that you would be welcome to borrow.
Please be aware that the children may need support with this. Alphabetical searching is tricky, but mastering this skill will pay off in a number of ways across different areas of learning.
Spelling
Spelling words to practice this week are:
shop dish
fish shut
rush like
are time
for her
Please could everyone do the usual look, say cover, write and check (twice through the list) and then write three sentences using as many of the words as possible.
