P1 Week Beginning 22.5.23

Hi all,

We are going to the National Museum tomorrow (Wed 24th)  for a little look around and a STEM workshop. Please ensure your child is in school uniform with a snack, water bottle and packed lunch. If you ticked a school packed lunch on the form, then you will receive one.

Maths – We are starting to learn about the names and properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

Literacy – We are learning how to use the joining word ‘but’ in our sentences.

Thank you to everyone who managed to join us for our second last Stay and Play on Friday. As always, it was wonderful to see you all and get a chance to share lots of learning!

Thursday – We are going to be going to the Link on Thursday afternoon to do some gardening and have a chance to explore loose parts.

Homework

Reading: Lots of children can’t move onto their next stage books because they have not learned their key words. Please help your child to learn these when reading. As always, pages to be read will be written in their green reading record. If you need any extra copies of key words, or think you might be missing some, then please get in touch.

Spelling: Your child has to read the sentence and then spell the missing word, as shown by the picture beside the sentence. It is good practise to get your child to copy the sentence underneath. This helps to encourage great handwriting.

P.E – Children have P.E. on Thursday this week.

Dates for the Diary

P1 Library Visits:

  • Friday 9th June
  • Friday 23rd June

P1 Stay and Play:

  • Friday 16th June (9am – 9:50am)

We are still collecting empty boxes and kitchen roll tubes (plus other similar items) for our junk modelling. This is our favourite part of the craft table!

🌞 P2 SHOW AND TELL 🎤

Show and Tell Primary 2

These will take place in class on 31st May and 1st of June

Your topic of discussion is “my favourite place” – This can be a place nearby that you go to with friends or family, a holiday destination, a relative’s house, a sports venue etc.  But it must be something that you can talk about, in detail.

You can bring a photo with you or email one to me (k.hinton@midlothian.education) so I can pop it on the SMARTboard as you talk.

What I am looking for: Looking at the audience, speaking clearly in full sentences for at least 1 minute. Answering 2 questions.  It is important that parents do not write it down for their child to read as this prevents the natural flow of presenting.

Examples of what you might tell me: Where it is, what makes it your favourite place, when you go or went, how you feel when you are there and why, is there something unique about the place, is there a smell or taste that reminds you of that place when you are not there….

I cannot wait to hear all about your favourite places P2

P1 Week Beginning 15.5.23

Hi all,

If you had not yet paid or returned the trip letter, please do so ASAP. We are going to the National Museum on Wednesday 24th May. Please remember if you have not opted for your child to get a packed lunch from school, then you need to provide one on the day.

Family photos can still be emailed/brought in to add to our family wall. Thank you to everyone who has passed theirs on!

Maths – We are starting to learn about o’clock and half past on analogue and digital clocks.

Literacy – We are learning how to use the joining word ‘and’ in our sentences.

Homework

Reading: Lots of children can’t move onto their next stage books because they have not learned their key words. Please help your child to learn these when reading. As always, pages to be read will be written in their green reading record.

Spelling: Just like last week, your child has a worksheet to complete. They have to read the sentence and then spell the missing word, as shown by the picture beside the sentence. It is good practise to get your child to copy the sentence underneath. This helps to encourage great handwriting.

P.E – Children have P.E. on Wednesday and Thursdays.

Dates for the Diary

  • Friday 9th June
  • Friday 23rd June

2.5.23 Primary 2 Homework etc

2.5.23

This week reading is not the usual book and instead it is a reading comprehension sheet.  PLEASE ask your child to read out the words and solve the problems themselves and do not do their work for them as this does not aid learning.

SPELLING:

  1. There 2. That 3. With 4. Was. 5. Saw. 6. Came 7. Went 8. Played 9. Think 10. They

Please write these x3 in your jotter and then write them in sentences.  You can use more than 1 word for each sentence.

In Numeracy we are practising counting in 2’s and 10s and are looking at making 100 using 10s e.g. 80+?=100.  Children are identifying the link to their number bonds to 10 to solve these.

HIT THE BUTTON: Children should go on the website or app to complete the free game on Number bonds – to 100 (10s).  This is an excellent game for developing mental maths and number bonds to 10/20 which children should be able to mostly do without counting on fingers.

👑 CORONATION DAY CELEBRATION – A HUGE THANK YOU💂

Everyone who took part in the Coronation Celebrations on Tuesday would all like to say a huge Thank You to our amazing parent council for organising the day.  The day ran so smoothly and each and every adult and child felt special, making memories to cherish.

Events included: biscuit decorating, craft making, crown making, loose parts and water play, inflatable bouncy castle and assault course, a parade,  costumes, community picnic lunch, games, music and a visit from our VIP the LordLieutenant of Midlothian who “broke the soil” to begin the planting of our King’s orchard.

I am sure you agree that it was a great day.  Please see below for some snapshots and highlights!
