Primary 3 Homework week beginning 17.1.21

Hi everyone,

Welcome back! It has been amazing to see how switched on your little ones are post winter holidays. We have had a fab first week back and this week we return to our regular routine of homework.

Reminders

Digital Devices

If you have not yet completed the form related to the issuing of digital devices to your children please do ASAP. This takes around 5 minutes and the form can be found at the bottom of this post alongside Mrs Hinton’s post.

Homework

Poetry

As part of our Scots focus this month the children are being asked to look at some Scots poetry. P3 are focusing on the work of JK Annand. I am asking the children to read through two different Annand poems. At the end of the month we will be holding our annual poetry competition where 2 children from each class will perform to the school. Should your child wish to perform they can learn one of these poems at home and we will vote in class for p3’s two performers the week prior to the competition.

Spelling

Spelling words have been glued into the children’s jotters. Please remember to practise the words AND write the sentences unless this has been discussed with me previously.

The core words to practice are column 1 and 2. Column 3 is optional.

Numeracy/Maths

In the back of each child’s new homework jotter they have a sheet detailing some great mental numeracy activities that can be used to warm up the brain and strengthen understanding of numeracy strategies.

Children also have a numeracy work sheet looking at related division and multiplication facts. This is also due for this Friday.

Digital Devices

Thank you to the families who have already filled out the forms as part of the exciting Midlothian Council scheme to allocate each child  with a learning device. So far, 65% of pupils are enrolled to be allocated devices when the time comes.

Please see below for more information.  There is a form to fill out which takes around 5 minutes.  If possible, please enter the midlothian.education username and password for your child (they know this as they use it to log in to chromebooks at school).  The form can be done without this but it does make the process quicker if you use it.  Every child has been given this!

Parental Acknowledgement Form (must be completed ASAP).

There are answers to frequently asked questions on the Equipped for Learning site, as well as useful contacts should you wish to discuss the scheme further.

As part of Midlothian Council’s Equipped for Learning programme, a digital device for learning is being provided to every child of school age. This is to ensure that all young people have access to the technology they need for learning, both at school and at home.

For further information on the programme, and to fill out the parental agreement form please see the links below.  The devices will not be allocated for full use until the agreements are filled out.  This is an online form.

P6 Week Beginning 10.1.22

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I hope you all had a wonderful and peaceful festive break, it was so lovely to see all the children today. I feel like it has been forever since I last saw them all, and I loved hearing all about their Christmas news.

P.E. has now changed to Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, please can your child come to school dressed for P.E on these days.

We begin our skiing lessons next week (Wednesday 19th January) and I know the children are very excited for them. Please remember as it is cold the children will need:

  • Warm trousers or loose fitting jogging bottoms (no thin leggings)
  • Warm jumper and a waterproof jacket
  • Waterproof outerwear is advised
  • Ski or good hard wearing warm gloves
  • Warm/thick long socks

Please ensure that your child is on time for school as the bus leaves promptly on Wednesday morning! It is also advised that hair is worn in low pony tails and no hair products are used on skiing days. (e.g. hairspray and hair gel)

Due to a slight tightening of Covid restrictions within school, children in P6 can no longer buy a school dinner. Therefore, pupils should bring their own packed lunch from home once more. Children will eat this in the classroom.

Homework will begin next week and will follow the same routine as it did prior to the holidays. The children will have reading, spelling and a numeracy/other activity each week. This will be given out on a Monday and has to be returned on Friday.

Over the next three weeks, we have a whole school Scottish focus. Over these weeks we will be learning all about Scotland, including famous Scots and Scots’ language. At the end of the month we will have our Scottish poetry recital too. This week the children will have the chance to pick from three different Scottish poems and they will bring this home to learn. At the end of the next week, the children will have time to recite their poem to the class. This will be a great opportunity for them to showcase their passion and enthusiasm!

Mandarin will continue on Wednesday afternoons with Miss Sun.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need anything.

Not much to report this week:

P.E. Days have changed – P5 will now have P.E. on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon. These days children should come to school dressed for P.E. with layers in case it is outside.

We will start new reading books this week but spelling homework will resume next week.
