P5 Week beginning 07/03/22

Dear Parents and Carers,

INDOOR SHOES: Please can I remind you that your child should now be bringing a pair of indoor shoes (suitable to do P.E. in) to change into at school. Our carpets have really suffered and it costs a lot to get them cleaned.

It has been lovely to see so many parents this week to have our Trio meetings. I look forward to speaking to the rest of you this week.

Homework: Please see reading books and spelling jotters as usual.

I have spoken to many of you about the importance of your child learning their times tables for rapid recall. Please encourage your child to work on this and support them by asking them questions in and out of order whenever you can. Little and often is a good way to approach it.

Last week two groups of children were involved in doing some gardening around the school with a couple of parent volunteers. This week the rest of the class will have the opportunity to take part in gardening.

Kind regards,

Lisa Cumming  l.cumming@midlothian.education

🇺🇦 DRESS DOWN FOR UKRAINE 💛💙 11.3.22

Our school community have been desperate to do something to help Ukraine. 🇺🇦.

We have decided to have a dress down day on Friday and ask everyone to wear something blue and yellow if possible. We ask that everyone brings a cash donation too. We are donating money to a charity that matches your donations, so anything we raise will be doblubled. More info will be given when donations are in.

Thanks for your support

P5 Week Beginning 28/02/22

Dear Parents and Carers,

The children really enjoyed the drumming session on Thursday using Samba drums and other percussion instruments.

This week please check your child’s bag for the letter for the trio appointment. If the time is not suitable please get in touch. Anyone who has requested a telephone appointment will be given a date and time for the following week (week beginning 7/3/22). As before it is one adult allowed, your child must attend with you and a mask must be worn. Please come to the external class door.  I look forward to seeing you. If you are having a telephone appointment the form will be sent home with you and your child should be present during the call.

We have noticed that the carpets are suffering from using outdoor shoes in school. Please could all children bring a pair of shoes to change into. These shoes should be suitable to use in P.E. (velcro or laced trainers) and to be left at school (as they were before COVID).

Homework:

Please see reading books as usual.

Spelling words will be in spelling jotters.

Numeracy – Please continue to work on times tables.

On Thursday 3rd March. It is World Book Day, every child brought a letter home on Thursday about this. Your child can dress as a character from a book. They should also bring their favourite book to school to share with the class.

Kind regards,

Lisa Cumming     l.cumming@midlothian.education

P5 Week Beginning 21/02/22

Welcome Back!

I hope you all had a good break.

This week P.E. is on Monday and Wednesday as normal, please come dressed appropriately and with water.

We have an African Drumming session on Thursday – these are great fun and the children really enjoy learning about the instruments and the rhythms.

On Wednesday some of the children will be involved in some gardening in the school grounds under the guidance of some parent helpers.

Homework: Reading, please see reading books as usual.

Spelling: Handed out on Tuesday, these words are in their spelling jotters. Please make sure work is completed neatly and returned by the following Monday.

Numeracy: Please work with your child on their times tables. It is really important that they learn them to help with numeracy and maths tasks such as fractions, calculating area, dividing, problem solving etc.

Chromebooks: These will remain at school just now, there are one or two details to be sorted out before they bring them home.

Parent Consultations: These are taking place week beginning 28/02/22. Letters were sent home today. If you cannot attend on the dates given, please let me know to arrange a different day / date or to arrange a telephone consultation.

Kind regards,

Lisa Cumming                         l.cumming@midlothian.education

P5 Week Beginning 07/02/22

Dear Parents / Carers,

Unfortunately I am off sick this week, the class will be covered by the following teachers: Monday – Mrs Falconer,  Tuesday – Miss Brunt then Mrs Falconer,  Wednesday – Miss Brunt, Mrs Wallace and then Miss Brunt, Thursday – Mrs Caldwell and Friday Mrs Falconer.  (Obviously this could change and I may be back towards the end of the week).

WEDNESDAY’S P.E. HAS MOVED TO THURSDAY THIS WEEK.

Exciting News for this week – Every child will receive their own digital device. There are some training sessions to take place and procedures to be sorted out before the children will be bringing them home. We expect that children will be able to bring them home at some point soon after the February break.

There is no spelling homework this week.

Reading – please check their reading books.

I hope you all have a lovely half term break.

Kind regards,

Lisa Cumming

P5 Week Beginning 28/01/22

Dear Parents and Carers,

I wanted to say how impressed I was with the children’s efforts at learning a poem in Scots language. They all did so well and clearly worked hard with it. What was lovely to see was that all the children stood in front of the class and had a go, this is difficult to do and I know some children found it particularly hard. We have been talking about ‘trying new things’ and ‘going out of our comfort zone’ – most of the children were out of their comfort zone this week – they should all be very proud of themselves as I am of them!

This week: READING please see reading books and jotters. I am gradually introducing reading tasks to the groups – these are in their specific reading jotter.

SPELLING: I am changing the day that I hand out spelling – this is because of the change in P.E. day. Homework will come home on a Tuesday now but is not due back until the following Monday. If it is completed then it can be handed in before if they prefer to do it before the weekend. Their spelling dictation will still be on the Friday so they do need to have been learning the words through the week.

P.E. Monday and Wednesday

MANDARIN: Wednesday – the children have been learning about Chinese New Year with Miss Sun. Also learning to write Chinese characters using traditional brush pens and holding them the correct way.

HEALTH WEEK: This is the second of our three health weeks. Our focus this week is on mental health. We will be looking at positive friendships and exploring substance misuse. As a class we have a daily positive affirmation which we discuss and share examples of.  In P.E. Miss Simpson will be doing some yoga at the end of each session.

SCHOOL LUNCHES: This week we will return to eating in the lunch hall. Children will go outside at 12.30pm and be called in by a bell to eat and then be able to go back outside if they have finished by 1.15pm.

Many thanks,

Lisa Cumming   l.cumming@midlothian.education

P5 Week Beginning 24/01/22

P.E. is on Monday and Wednesday -please remember to come in appropriate clothing and with water for hydration.

Please see reading books for homework.

Spelling homework is in their jotter.

Scottish poetry recital. As I hope you will have seen, all the children were given a scot’s poem to learn. On Tuesday they will be performing them in front of the class and someone will be chosen to represent the class in the competition on Friday.

Many thanks,

Lisa Cumming                                                          l.cumming@midlothian.education

P5 Week Beginning 10/01/2022

Happy New Year Everyone!

I hope you have all had a good break and managed to enjoy some celebrations whilst avoiding the dreaded Covid.  Hopefully you have all manged to stay healthy and I look forward to starting the year healthily and welcoming all the class back tomorrow.

Not much to report this week:

P.E. Days have changed – P5 will now have P.E. on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon. These days children should come to school dressed for P.E. with layers in case it is outside.

We will start new reading books this week but spelling homework will resume next week.

Please ensure your child is dressed for the cold weather for break and lunchtimes. Extra layers are welcome in school as we will continue to have windows and doors open at times.

P5 will be having free school lunches from this term. Due to recent Covid changes we will not be eating in the dining room because we need to stay within our class group indoors. A letter will be issued regarding lunches.

As always please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind regards,

Lisa Cumming                                                                       l.cumming@midlothian.education
