P7 robotics award winning team at the Vex nationals competition 2017, Birmingham

Mrs Hinton could not be any prouder 🙂 P7 have had Robotics as a topic this term and have been working through the Vex Robotics curriculum. This STEAM ( science, technology, engineering, art and maths) topic has really taken off and a team of 8 travelled to Birmingham with another team from St David’s Primary School to compete in the National competition.

Pupils have had to study robot builds from simple from complex, they analysed how they work and designed their own robot for for a challenge, built, it was then programmed to move, pick up hex balls, lift and transport them, place them in high and low goals, go up and down a bridge and balance in a bridge with 1 other robot…..very tricky. They also had an engineering notebook detailing, step by step, how they built and programmed the robot and this was assessed.

In Birmingham, pupils represented Scotland as the only 2 teams from Scotland and competed in driver and skills matches. Their robot was inspected and analysed and they were tested on their knowledge and understanding.

They had under 3 weeks, as a team, and we’re up against teams with experience from 2-6 years so they have done amazing. Thank you to the parents who have come in to help over this time too.

We have learned a lot from our fast paced day yesterday and saw some truly technological robot design and programming. We also are so happy to have won the Think Award for knowledge of programming, being able to talk about it on detail with terminology and relate it to our chosen robot design. Well done!

A different P7 team will.compete in a Midlothian school contest in 2 weeks.

P2 Spelling – error!

Apologies but I posted the wrong list for this week.

It should be List 25 ‘ou’ as in round and pound. A new 6 week sheet will be sent home today.

Topic– Fairyland continues…last week, we based our activities on Little Red Riding Hood. Children wrote descriptions of characters, sequenced the story, made stick puppets and this week, will look at simple co-ordinates in map planning. Children also had great fun drawing around Eddie to give them a template to paint for the giant!!

PE Gymnastics on Monday and PE on Thursday.

Thank you,

Miss Brunt

P3 update!

  • Just a reminder that a parent performance of our Egyptian Assembly will be on Friday 17th at 11:45.
  • We will also have school library that day. So can children please remember their books or they will not be allowed to take out another one.
  • Homework this week will be spelling and personal project (see last post for more info). There will be no reading sent home for most groups as we are still carrying on with our novel study. Please read for enjoyment every night.

Any questions please ask.

P4 Homework 7-3-17

Homework 07/03/17

I must apologise for the lack of homework on the website last week- I totally forgot to put it on!

This Week

The Children have some assessment to undertake in class this week and have been bust revising Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday will be very tiring days for them and I expect they will be extra tired after school. Therefore, I have opted not to give any spelling homework out this week and reading to only a few of the groups. I am aware that most of the children don’t get to their homework till later in the week and I would like to take this extra burden from them this week and let them enjoy their clubs and daytrips etc.

Reading Homework

Pink – See bookmark

Orange – See bookmark

Green –  See bookmark

Learnits are also optional this week.

Numeracy- Keep going with your Learnits. If there are any people who need new learnits can you write a note and let me know.

Learnits- The Rules…

The children are asked the question on the learnits card on several occasions and if they answer correctly,  within about two seconds, they can have a tick. Once they have ten ticks they can throw the learnit away. Once the envelope is empty they can have some new learnits. You can keep the envelope at home until it needs refilled.

Don’t feel you have to do all of them at once. A few at a time is sufficient.
