P1 Homework week beginning 9.3.20

Hello All,

School News

Next week sees ‘Road Safety Day’ ( Beep Beep Day!) on Wednesday the 18th so the Junior Road Safety Officers and Mrs Sharp has organised some activities for children. Pupils have been asked if they can wear one Hi-Viz or brightly coloured item of clothing to school that day.

Toys

Can I please reiterate that toys should not be brought to school unless it is a Friday. It is becoming an increasingly disruptive issue as more and more children bring things to school and are distracted by them throughout the day.

Literacy

We are still working our way through consonant blends. This week’s initial blends are: sp, sn, sm, st, sc , sk*and sw.

This website has loads of fun online games focused on consonant blends.

http://www.eslphonicsworld.com/games/beginning-consonant-blends/consonant-blend-games.html

*sk can come at the beginning or end of a word.

Letter formation site

I mentioned this site to many parents at the learning trios and realised I haven’t yet put it on the site. Apologies for the delay. This site shows children how to form their letters correctly and where to start and end.

Homework

I have sent home a literacy home learning wall in your child’s book bag (also attached below). This is just a variety of activities you can do to work on your child’s phonic awareness and blending skills. I have also sent home a jotter, it is A4 and labelled handwriting, which you can use to evidence any work they do. Feel free to use this as you see fit, children can work directly in the jotter or can glue in work or pictures.

This week’s homework (due Friday 13th March)

Hello everyone,

For reading this week, Primary 3 will be doing non-fiction books. Your child will have a book that is one level below the stage that they read fiction books at; do not be alarmed as non-fiction books tend to be a level harder than their fiction counterparts! If possible, can you discuss your child’s book with them, try and prompt questions about the contents and point of the features of non-fiction books please.

This week’s spelling pattern is the /or/ pattern. The list for this pattern is as follows:

  1. twig
  2. from
  3. pork
  4. walk
  5. jaw
  6. north
  7. straw
  8. saucepan
  9. ninety
  10. hundred

Finally, for maths this week we are drawing closer to finishing our mini-topic on time. Units of time is our focus for the week, so if possible, try and discuss time equivalencies with your child (eg. 60 seconds is 1 minute, 365 days is 1 year).

Thanks,

Mr McGaff

Primary 6/7 Boys and Girls football

Starting this week, Mr McGaff and Mr Nelson will be leading  football coaching sessions for both the P6/7 Loanhead Primary School boys and girls teams. The sessions take place on Tuesdays after school between 15:15 and 16:00, and alternate between the boys and the girls on a bi-weekly basis. The coaching sessions are set to take place as follows:

Boys

10th March, 24th March, 21st April, 5th May.

Girls

17th March, 31st March, 28th April, 12th May.

Sessions will take place either indoors or outdoors depending on weather, so please make sure that your child is prepared with appropriate clothing on their days. If you have any questions regarding this, please do not hesitate to get in touch with Mr McGaff at s.mcgaff@mgfl.net.

Best wishes,

Mr McGaff and Mr Nelson

P7 Info W/B 9th March 2020

Hi all,

This week sees ‘Road Safety Day’ ( Beep Beep Day!) on Wednesday so the Junior Road Safety Officers and Mrs Sharp have organised some activities for children. Pupils have been asked if they can wear one Hi-Viz item of clothing to school that day. A letter was sent home about this. Many thanks.

Football Club – Mr McGaff and Mr Nelson are planning to run a P7 football club after school on Tuesdays, alternating weeks for girls and boys. Details still to be confirmed.

Basketball Tournament – Ten P7s will represent LPS on Wednesday morning at a local competition so, good luck folks!

PE is Monday, Tuesday and rugby is on Thursday this week.

Chrome Books – Mrs Gilchrist, from ICT support, is coming to P7 on Tuesday to drop off chrome books ( a 4 week loan) to show us how to start using Google Classroom. Watch this space! Children have been successfully using Scratch in school and at home to code animations and games. They have picked this up very quickly!

Science – Our focus this term is on energy and in particular, electricity. Children have had fun exploring simple circuits and we hope to incorporate this into models or games.

Independent Study –There’s a core group of pupils who consistently do not complete their study tasks at home. I am going to speak to these children this week. An extension on the last task will be given. If work is still not being done, a message will be sent home to inform individual parents of this. Well done to those who do complete their tasks. You are developing independent study skills that you will need at secondary school. A new reading comprehension task will be sent home on Wednesday this week.

Headstrong – P7 participated in their first session last Friday. Pupils will be given a scrapbook to start collecting memories in; photos, certificates, newspaper cuttings, tickets for events etc.

And finally…

Unbelievably, it is coming to the time thoughts are really turning to the end of primary school for P7s and their new adventures at secondary school. We are already exploring ideas for the end of term P7 show. However, I wondered if parents could start to send in a (maximum of 2) photos of your child on their first day at school ( even if not at Loanhead at that point). Failing this, a photo of your child when they were about 5 years old. I know this maybe seems early but time really does fly by. You can send a digital photo to me at S.Brunt@mgfl.net or hand in an actual print for me to scan. TIA!

Thank you,

Miss S Brunt

P2 Homework w.b. 9.3.20

Hi all,

**Just a reminder that all trip letters (for Rosslyn Chapel) should be handed in next week please, if you have not already handed it in**

We are very excited to have Miss Clements join us on Monday and stay with us until the summer term. P.E will be on Monday and Tuesday morning this week.

Apologises I did not send out the non-fiction worksheet to go alongside reading books this week, time escaped me. We have finished learning about money and are moving onto time in maths – we are focusing on reading o’clock and half past times on analogue and digital clocks.

Homework for the week:

Reading: Pages to be read have been written in your child’s green reading record. Please sign against the date to indicate that homework has been completed.

Spelling: We will be learning the ‘y’ sound (pronounced as the long i vowel sound) – fry, sky and shy etc. The spelling list will contain words with this sound.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend,

Miss Lauren Waller (L.Waller@mgfl.net)

This week’s homework (due Friday 6th March)

Hello everyone, I cannot believe March is upon us already!

This week’s homework is business as usual. Could your child please read half their book for Wednesday, then the whole book for Friday. Next week I am planning on sending non-fiction home for homework, so I am using this week as a chance to gauge what books would be appropriate. The spelling pattern is /ou/, which is as follows:

  1. snap
  2. swam
  3. loud
  4. cloud
  5. found
  6. now
  7. crowd
  8. sunflower
  9. seventy
  10. eighty

In class we are focusing on the difference between ‘ow’ and ‘ou’, which both make the same sound in this pattern. Finally, in Maths we are looking at calendars/dates, so if possible, can you try and have a look at any calendars around the home so that they are familiar with the format? We will be going over it all in class, but this extra activity would give your child the chance to make connections with dates in their own lives!

Thanks a lot,

Mr McGaff

Primary 5 news and information week beginning 2nd March

Pupils  have daily reading homework which should be part read aloud for most children and discussed with parents.  All groups also have spelling words and are required to write each word 3 times and then write them in sentences/story/funny paragraph/letter – to show they understand the word in context.

Pupils also have Week 2 of their Alien literacy homework due for Friday, each child has a copy of the 6 week homework block but you can also Click here for more info .  This can be done in  jotters, on a computer and emailed to k.hinton@mgfl.net or pupils can share with me on GLOW -Pupils all have passwords to access this at home. The standard of week 1 homework was out of this world! 🙂

MATHS – Pupils all  have goals in numeracy – they will have specific learn its or times tables to learn and are required to practise these at home regularly.  Try also counting up in 6’s, 7’s and 8’s starting from random numbers e.g. 17 and see how fast they can do it forwards and backwards.

Pupil Presentations – some of the class did their homework and provided a “Big Question” for their presentations.  They had first choice of dates.  All pupils have been given a date – see below

P5 PRESENTATIONS

WORLD BOOK DAY IS THURSDAY – Pupils will not be dressing up but are required to bring in a model of their favourite character/setting/book – see the other post about this.
