primary 1 News and Information 4/10/21

This week your child will come home with a reading book on Monday.  These books will vary in length and words.  Please do not worry.  We run homework from Monday-Friday.

We are also consolidating addition in 10 so there is a numeracy sheet for this week as well.

Suggested home learning:

Monday: First half of the book – reading the pictures to tell an extended story.  Asking some questions to check understanding on each page.  Go over key words

Tuesday: Second half of book and Key words

Wednesday – Key words and number sheet

Thursday  – Whole book and a game of dominos or some mental maths (5 minutes)

(We are moving onto stage 2 key words)

Please return SeeSaw permission slips so I can get the log in details out this week.

It is really helpful for pupils to have book bags.  Key words and books should go home every night and be in school each day Monday-fri

Currently I am trying to post info on the website (loanhead.mgfl.net under P1) please check there for info about what we are up to J

P6 Week Beginning 4.10.21

Hi all,

The class had a wonderful week learning about how we use maths in real life and riding their bikes to school. I was so impressed by how many of them still rode their bikes to school, even in the rain! Amazing!!

P.E. is on Monday and Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure your child comes to school dressed for P.E. and has a water bottle, filled with water only.

Homework will be handed out on Monday and should be handed in on Friday. This week, there will be spelling, reading and numeracy. This week, the numeracy task will be following on from our learning in class as we begin to learn about the value of digits up to 2 or 3 decimal places. Please ensure spelling words are spelt correctly and have been written in cursive.

The class have really been enjoying reading our class novel ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Morpurgo, and this week they even wrote stories as if they were Michael stranded on an island.

ZOOM assembly on Friday at 11:30am.

Thanks for all of your support,

Miss Lauren Waller

Recent News

Last week was full of variety. Maths Week blending with Bike Week led to some super learning opportunities – including making healthy drinks on a smoothie bike, researching the first bikes made and using maths to create a unique display poster, sketching a bike and applying knowledge of negative and relational space, online games and best of all, participation in the National Sumdog Maths contest; I’m proud to say that P7 came 79th out of over 7,500 classes that signed up!

IT –  Midlothian Council are in the process of migrating our IT systems to Google. In a few months time, we hope that each pupil will get their own device to use ( Chromebook). Children now have an ‘@midlothian.education‘ email address and new log-in details.

We have also successfully migrated into our new Google Classroom and very soon, I’d like to share some photo albums of recent events with you there.

My new email address :

s.brunt@midlothian.education

My old ‘@mgfl.net‘ address may work for a short time too.

That’s all for now,

Thank you,

Miss Brunt

P4 Homework -28/09/21

This week we are having a change from our normal homework routine. As it is ‘Maths Week Scotland 2021’ this week, our homework has a maths focus.

All pupils have been given a sheet home explaining their homework with one main task and a grid of optional tasks.

It is hoped that by doing some of the fun activities, the pupils will become aware of how maths is used in the world around them and their everyday lives.

P3 Homework W/B: 27.9.21

Hi everyone,

Reminders:

  • This week is Maths week AND Bike week in Loanhead.

BIKE WEEK – Children are encouraged (weather permitting) to cycle to school to raise awareness of this as a healthy alternative way to travel.  Any child who participate will be given a ticket and will be entered into the raffle to win a prize! We also have ‘Bling your Bike’ taking place on Wednesday so get creative and get decorating!

MATHS WEEK

We are also taking part in national Maths week . We will be taking part in different maths challenges both indoor and outdoors. The theme this year is maths in real life so if you wanted to support this you could discuss how you use maths and numeracy in your everyday life and why it is important. Take the opportunity when you are out and about to point out how maths is used everywhere from bus timetables to speed limit signs, shops to cooking.  Another great opportunity to highlight the importance of maths in the real world  is the maths week trail being hosted by the national museum which can be picked up from the museum or downloaded here:

Museum trails (nms.ac.uk)

This could be a fun day out and supports what we are highlighting in school this week.

The children have also been entered into a SUMDOG contest this week that is lots of fun and Sumdog is excellent for just general practise as well as allow me to set targetted tasks for each child/group. The Sumdog passwords will go out on Tuesday and all children will have practised logging on by themselves on Tuesday morning so will know what to do.

P5 Week beginning 27/09/21

Dear Parents and Carers,

The children really enjoyed the drumming session with Infectious Grooves on Wednesday, learning about the history of the drums we were using and making polyrhythms.

This week:

Reading – please see reading book for homework.

Spelling – please see spelling jotter for the pattern or sound they are learning.

P.E. is as usual on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.

On Wednesday this week we will probably not have Mandarin but hopefully back to normal next week.

It is Bike to School week this week. Every child who cycles either to or from school or both will be entered into a raffle to win a prize.

Miss Simpson has organised the Smoothie Bike for P5, 6 and 7. The children will get the opportunity to design and make a smoothie using the bike to power the machine.

On Wednesday it is ‘Bling your Bike’ day so get your bikes decorated!

Maths Week Scotland: this week there is a competition on Sumdog for the children to take part in. All children should have their usernames and passwords to be able to use Sumdog at home. This is great to be part of the competition but also to use regularly for general numeracy revision.

Many thanks,

Lisa Cumming
