World Book Day         Thursday 5th March

This year, instead of dressing up, we would like all children to produce a 3D model of their favourite character or book. Anything can be used to produce this but it must be 3D.

Some suggestions for the base: different size/shape boxes, tubes, potatoes, origami, lego or other construction materials, eggs (hard boiled). These can then be painted and decorated with anything of your choosing.

If anyone needs any help from school please let us know.

We will have an exhibition of all the models for the classes to view. There may even be some prizes too!

We will be giving out the vouchers for a free book on Thursday too.

Below is the link to the World Book Day website. Here you will find lots of fun activities and ideas to encourage your child with reading for enjoyment.

On Thursday we will be doing ‘Drop Everything And Read’ your child can  bring a book from home if they would like to…when the bell rings in school they will stop whatever they are doing and read for pleasure. We will be counting up the number of stories we share with each other from Monday until 29th March as part of the ‘Great Story Share’.

In school we will do some story sharing among other fun activities.

Update for the Talent Show:-
The bar will be open from 6:15pm – 11pm.
We will have a program of events , order of performance etc on the night.
This has been selected at random.

First performance is 7pm so please arrive sharp as not to disturb performances. If you child is performing please arrive in plenty time !


There are tickets left for anyone wishing to come along and support our acts!

Screen Addiction

e-Safety is an important part of keeping children safe at Loanhead Primary School . We have extensive security measures in place in school, which are monitored both internally and externally, to help safeguard pupils from potential dangers or unsuitable material. Any e-Safety incidents are recorded and managed.  e-Safety is taught to all pupils explaining and demonstrating how to stay safe and behave appropriately online.

We can only be successful in keeping children safe online if we work with parents to ensure the e-Safety message is consistent. It is important that parents speak to their children about how they can keep safe and behave appropriately online.

Recently, many of the children have been talking about the Momo challenge and have been increasingly worried about it.  Like many of these online phenomenon the publicity and hype has made this a lot bigger than it needs to be.  For a quick briefing on it see the link below.

It’s essential to be realistic – banning the internet or technology will not work and it often makes a child less likely to report a problem. Education around safe use is essential.

P5 Homework w/b 11.6.18

P5 Homework will carry on this week as normal:

  • Spelling Activity Cards (complete green & red is optional)
  • Literacy Circles Role (week 6 – last week of P5 reading homework!)
  • Times Table practice

We have now organised our class trip to the Scottish Mining Museum for Wednesday 20th June 2018 and are really looking forward to this. We are still waiting for 5  ME2 slips to be returned and would really appreciate these before the end of the week.

If there is any parent/carer who would like to help out on the trip next week please let the office know or send a note in with your child and I will give you a ring.

Hello everyone, I hope that you are enjoying the snow.

I have made a whole school sumdog competition so please remember to log in – if you need help with your log in details then email me.

Remember your individual targets – where do you need to go? How will you get there?

Home learning – due Wednesday

Literacy – please remember your book reports and quiz that were due in on 1st.  If you want to challenge yourself and consolidate learning we have done in class then write a short setting description of a snowy setting – remember our in-class success criteria (Using your senses, adjectives, adverbs, long and short sentences and no story/charactes e.g. The warm sun shone down on the turquoise water like freshly cleaned diamonds, the birds lazily perched on the tan branches while the sound of them gleefully singing danced in my ears.  I felt at peace.” Type it on word and email me, share with me on GLOW or just write it and bring it in next week.

P7 DAY OUT.

An excited and keen parent first mentioned this in January and I could not believe that it was time to think about it so a pat on the back for planning ahead.  She has volunteered time to help organise this and attend on the day.  I have had a few more parents ask me about the day out and would suggest a wee team to go with the pupil ideas would work well.

Pupils discussed it with me and I posted the results on the page last week.  As Time Capsule was the firm favourite I presumed people would look into this – I am happy to get the office to price a bus for the parent team while they organise prices for the trip and food.

Pupils are saying the Time Capsule is closed during the day – after a quick email they got back to me to say that for trips etc they can open at 10am, you just need to speak to them.

Paintballing was not first or second choice but I do have to mention that this, or similar activities, is not something Mrs Donnelly or I would be happy to have organised for their day out so this is not an option.

If Time Capsule is not an option I am happy to go back to the class and chat about other ideas (escape rooms, Blair Drummond plus BBQ, Picnic etc were also suggested after our discussion).

UPDATE: School closed tomorrow Friday 2nd March, BINGO NIGHT AT SCHOOL CANCELLED

Today (28.2.18), Thurs (1st March)and tomorrow (2.3.18)

Our building is closed. All Midlothian schools and nurseries are to be closed due to adverse weather conditions. Keep up to date with news and more info on the council website. We will update this page later today with more information if we have any.

P7 camp update

P7 campers are having a ball demonstrating great resilience, determination and perseverance. They are enjoying meeting new friends and working together to overcome challenges and reach new heights.

Mrs Hinton is proud of all They have achieved so far and is impressed with their manners and growth mindset. For those without Twitter here are some photos. Apologies if they are upside down….signal is rubbish etc.
