Health & Wellbeing short Parent Survey –

(you may need to paste link into address bar)

As part of our staff training we have been looking at the GIRFEC (Getting It Right For Every Child) process that is used throughout Scotland. New laws are coming into place that will formalise many of our practices.  Part of this process as we move forward and ensure we are meeting all the needs of our pupils is to carry out some self evaluation around the Health and Wellbeing of our pupils. Midlothian has produced questionnaires for parents, pupils and staff.

The online link to the parent survey is below. By completing the (very short) survey you will be helping us to identify areas of strength and concerns and your feedback is welcomed. Your responses are anonymous. Your support in completing this survey is much appreciated.

Reading in P6 this term

This term P6 will be practicing reading comprehension skills such as questioning and inference with Miss Prior.

With Miss Longford we will be focusing on non-fiction texts and there will be no school group reading books sent home. All children are still expected to read for a minimum of 20 minutes per night as they will be completing work based on their individual home reading in class.

The new tables focus this term is the eight times table. We will be practicing these regularly in class and it is expected that children spent time each day learning them too.

Maths

Please continue with your learnits at home.

This term we are focusing on the 4 x table, if you could practise this new table as well as the 3x table that would be much appreciated. Remember that the children should know the answers as fast as the learn-its.

If there are any children who need their learnits updated please let me know.

What a jasmine flower!
When jasmine blooms.
Not even snow is whiter.
I want to pluck one and wear it
But I’m afraid those around me would mock me.

What a jasmine flower!

P6 Homework for Miss Longford

Firstly Happy New Year!

We’ve had a great start back and this week will be focusing on budgeting in our numeracy lessons for ‘Finance week’.

At home everyone must work out how much their lunch costs everyday – e.g. 2 slices of bread, cheese, apple. This can be done either online, using receipts or by visiting a shop.

If you want to go for the hot challenge you should then compare how much it would cost to buy it from another supermarket.

Everyone has spelling words for next Monday in their jotters too. Write these out three times with the original word covered then decide on an activity you want to do to help you remember the spellings. The more creative the better and it may then be chosen for a future spelling homework for the whole class!

All homework for Miss Longford is due on a Monday each week.

P3 Homework Week starting 11/01/16

P2 Homework W/B 11.1.16

This week, the whole school is having a focus on finance. Following the success of our ‘Christmas Bank’ in December, where children had their own bank account and had to pay for activities, I will once again give each child £1 in plastic money to spend in the class shop and to pay for special activities. Children may also earn money for doing special jobs in class.  Other activities this week include:

  • Role play in the class shop ( as customer and as cashier)
  • Money Match challenges against the clock (on computers)
  • A Sumdog Challenge (Money to 20p)
  • Money problem solving tasks in pairs
  • Money worksheets

Growth Mindset and Learning Powers

We have been ‘learning about learning’ and have been discussing ways to improve our learning capacity by changing the way  we think about learning.

We have been using ” Instead of saying (something negative)…..try saying.(something positive)” See the picture below of our wall display.

  • WP_005216

We have also been discussing ‘Learning Powers’ ; each one has a cartoon character to illustrate it and the children have made a little story to accompany each one. The ‘Learning Powers’ are:

  • Concentrate
  • Don’t give up
  • Co-operate
  • Be curious
  • Have a go
  • Be imaginative
  • Keep improving
  • Enjoy learning

Learning powers will make children more resilient, less worried about making mistakes and more able to become independent learners.

Homework this week:

Spelling – the focus sound is ‘ay’. As we are learning cursive writing now, I am sending home a cursive writing sheet with some ‘ay’ words on to practise. This may be challenging but am encouraging the children to think positively….

Reading homework as normal – check green homework bags (Mon or Tues)

Numeracy – A money problem sheet to complete

– A Sumdog challenge ‘P2 Money to 20p’ (this task is optional)
