Primary 3 Homework – Week from 20th February

Primary 3 Homework – Week from 20th February

Our topic on the North and South Poles is really taking off now as we think about what these amazing places are like and what kinds of animals can survive there.

Please see below my note on written subtraction methods.

Best wishes,

Mr Buchan

Reading

Pages from class books to be read at home will be written down in the grids as usual.

I am going to stop writing down when children have been heard reading aloud on these grids because it has proved impossible to keep this up to date. All the children are heard three times a week on average – sometimes twice or sometimes four times depending on what else is happening. From now on I will only write notes on the reading grids if there is something specific to raise. I hope that is OK.

Spelling

More common words that people have been finding tricky.

taking                          cold

Please could we practise them using our usual look, say, cover, write and check method and then write sentences using them?

Numeracy

As you help the children with columns subtraction, please be aware that there are some slightly different ways of doing these written sums and it will be helpful if we can all use the same method. For example, the way I was taught is different from what I would now teach. The reason is that the decomposition method (shown below) reflects most closely the underlying concepts of place value and subtraction. The other ways work fine but they can be a bit confusing for some children.

6 5                 Take 4 away from 5 to get 1 in the units column.

 – 3 4                 Take 3 away from 6 to get 3 in the tens column.

____

You can’t take 5 from 2, so you decompose the

56 12                6 tens to become 5 tens and 1 ten moves across.

 – 3   5               You now have 12 minus 5 which gives 7 in the

_____              units column. In the tens column you then take 3

away from 5 which gives 2.

Our motto is:

If it’s too big on the floor… steal one from next door.

This goes with other golden rules:

– Start with the units

– Never take the top number away from the bottom

– When you write a sum, line up the columns correctly

To practise at home:

43 – 22                     87 – 62                     63 – 28                   91 – 72

86 – 39                    364 – 226             506 – 262                544 – 245

P7 Homework 19/2/18

All pupils have to finish their reading novels to the end for next Mon.

Pupils have a decimals worksheet for maths (due on Fri), we have been working on multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100 and 1000.

I have set a personal challenge of no screens after 8pm- this is not compulsory but a good talking point given that the class have screen obsessions.

We have been learning to tell the time in French – pupils would benefit from revising this.

For the parents organising the day out. We chatted about it and pupils voted on their top 3. See below.

Screen Time and Concentration – P7

Recently, they hot topic in class has been a game called “Fortnight” or similar.  Pupils are admitting that they are trying to pull “all nighters” without their parents knowing, some even claim to get up at 5.30 to play each other on line and many are spending fortunes on parent bank cards without permission.

I have had a few parents speak to me about their concerns relating to this obsession but also the language that pupils are using to converse with each other over phones/headsets while playing.  Some pupils are coming to school red eyed, tired and really distracted and when spoken to they are blaming too much screen time but are reluctant to stop.  Mrs Donnelly has advised that ALL parents be made aware of this.

While we do not wish to tell you how your child should spend their free time, we would like you to support is in promoting healthy lifestyles and good sleep hygiene which is not promoted by too much screen time.   If pupils are overstimulated and tired, it has been proven that this has severe effects on learning and concentration.

Most difficulties that arise in school come from social media or gaming and we ask for your support in this matter. We conducted a survey in P7 about screen time….there are some surprising results e.g. 52% of pupils s[end 5+ hours on a screen (Not inc T.V.) each day! (click the link below)

When speaking to specialists, some recommendations are:

  • Turn off the Wifi at a set time each night (be strong!)
  • No screens in bed rooms
  • Appropriate down time at least 2 hours before sleep
  • Passwords for all consoles, phones, tablets should be shared with you.

P1 Homework 19/02/18

Hope you have all enjoyed the short break.

Homework this week:

Reading: See the red card as usual and continue to support learning of the words in their word tins.

Phonics: We are moving on to learning consonant blends e.g. br, cr, fl, st etc. Please help your child by ensuring they blend the two letters together rather than saying ‘b r’ individually.

Numeracy we are continuing with counting backwards, if your child can count back from 10 please help them to count back from 12, then 15, then 18 etc. If your child can do this from 20 then extend this to counting back from 30.

Can you help reinforce that two 1p coins is the same as a 2p coin, five 1p is the same as five 1p coins or tw0 2p and a 1p etc. This can be quite a difficult concept to grasp so any additional support is beneficial.

PE: Primary 1 are lucky enough to have a block of gymnastics provided by external coaches but working with Mrs Duncan (PE Specialist). This means that from this week until Easter they will have PE on a Tuesday morning instead of Wednesday.

REQUEST FOR YOUR HELP PLEASE:

If you have any junk such as  cereal boxes, tubes (NOT toilet roll), pots, boxes, trays, tubs, lids etc please can we have them as P1/2 are setting up a junk modelling area to help develop creativity, problem solving, construction and design skills.  Also old catalogues, magazines, wrapping paper and birthday/Christmas cards.

Also if you have smaller items such as corks, bottle tops, jam jar lids, ribbon, string, buttons, beads, glass beads, curtain rings, etc. we would love to take these off your hands too!

If anyone has any boys trousers, girls trousers, girls tights that their own child has grown out of please could you hand them in to us. We need a supply of clothes in case children get wet or muddy and our supplies have depleted recently.

Many thanks,

Lisa Cumming

P2 Homework W/B 19.2.18

Hi all,

Hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend. Hopefully we’ll start to see signs of Spring soon!

Homework this week:

Spelling – List 25  ( ou as in out) . New spelling lists will be sent home.

Reading – continues as normal.

Numeracy – Sumdog Challenge ‘P2 Money Challenge’.

If possible, can you give your child  some change to play with; 1ps, 2ps, 5ps, 10ps and 20ps.  Counting money and working out change  is a fantastic way to practise adding and subtracting in a real life context.

Thanks to all who completed the rugby problem solving task.  I’ll send home a little ‘solution’ slip with the marked homework.

Topic – Electricity /Winter Olympics

PE – Wednesday and Thursday

Request – If you have any ‘junk’ spare, can you send this in please. Items such as cereal packets, kitchen roll tubes ( NOT toilet roll tubes please) small boxes, lids etc. P1 and P2 will have a ‘junk’ table to encourage construction/design/creativity and problem solving skills.

**Reminder** – Can you please check that snacks/lunches sent in, do not contain nuts or nut derivatives. We do have children in school with severe nut allergies. Thank you.

Learning Pit-

We have been discussing the ‘Learning Pit’ concept and making our own display in class. As you can see, this concept encourages children to persevere through challenges and find ways to solve problems. If you hear your child talking about the Learning Pit, you’ll now know what they mean! This ‘Language of Learning’ will be a big focus across the school this term.

Finally, P2 will be working with our school gardener Paul on Friday morning.

Thanks,

Miss Brunt

Primary 3 Homework – Week from 13th February

Primary 3 Homework – Week from 13th February

Our homework will be a bit different this week because of the half-term days off. I hope everybody has a good break.

Best wishes,

Mr Buchan

Temperatures Around the World

In class we have been talking about the temperature each day, linking to our topic on the north and south poles. We have also been making globes to help us investigate why temperatures vary in different places and at different times of the year.

Please could you help the children to find out the temperature in some different places around the world? This information can be found online (e.g. BBC Weather) or in most newspapers.

In class we have talked about the seven continents. We have also considered how places are usually warmer if they are near the equator. We are starting to talk about “north” and “south”.

What I have in mind is a list of about 5 places with:

– the daytime temperature in oC

– which continent the place is in

– if the place is near the equator or north / south

E.g. Cairo (Egypt), Africa, 19oC, north of equator but quite near

It might be best to start with places the children have already heard of. Otherwise capital cities would be good to use.

Numeracy

I will not set a new Sum Dog challenge, but the children can still get good practice on this if they would like.

Aside from this, it is always helpful to practise our Learnits for Big Maths. If anybody needs replacement flashcards then please let me know.

Reading

We won’t have new class reading books this week.

Spelling

I have picked out some words that lots of people in the class have been struggling with recently.

staying                        suddenly

dream                         doing

going                           thought

caught

Please could we practise them using our usual look, say, cover, write and check method and then write sentences using them?

P1 Homework 12/2/2018

As it is a 3 day week for the children this week I am not sending any new spelling or phonic homework home this week. I have asked the children to go over the words we have been learning in their small green jotter.

Reading: Please see the red card as usual and practise their words.

We are learning about the alphabet this week and the letter names rather than the sounds.

Maths / Numeracy: We are learning about data handling, creating charts, using tally marks and reading charts.

Our topic after the holidays is Toys – we will be looking at toys from the past as well as modern toys.

Thursday and Friday this week are holidays for the children.

Enjoy the short break and we all return on Monday 19th February.

P2 Homework W/B 12.2.18

Hi all,

As it’s only a 3 day week for the children, pupils will only have reading to do at home.

We’ll study the final spelling list 24 in class and try a dictation of it on Wednesday. So, no spelling at home this week.

After the wee break, however, can all pupils try and hand their completed spelling in on a Friday morning. I only had about 80% of the class doing their homework last week.

Numeracy– we’ll continue with place value up to 100  ( and even 1000) and problem solving. At home, children may want to try  a great maths website we use quite a bit called ‘Top Marks‘ (maths). It’s free! Choose ‘Learning Games‘ and pick 5-7 year old categories. We have been using the counting, ordering, sequencing and place value options. Children should remember the games we’ve played. I usually let them choose their own level.

Thanks to all who have handed in their rugby problem solving sheet- there have been various solutions declared so we’ll go over it in class tomorrow!

PE – Wednesday

Thursday and Friday are holidays for all pupils. All resume on Monday 19th Feb.

Thanks,

Miss Brunt
