*SCIENCE WEEK* We kicked off science week with a workshop called Fizz, Boom, Bang – pupils created fizzy, colour changing solutions and can identify different pHs of solutions. Photos below

Pupils will be encouraged to work within set times, unfinished work is going to be sent home regularly.  We are looking at presentation of work as a lot of work is now profiled for High School.

Pupils MUST be learning how to tell times and know their times tables as quickly as they can answer “what is your name?”  Test your child, can they do this for all times tables? They NEED this skill for high school.

HOMEWORK Unfinished maths booklets have been sent home for Thursday,  Pupils also have the following maths and literacy work to complete.  Please check and sign.

In class we are learning about being kind and are reading the novel Wonder.  Pupils should also always have a book of their choie to read at home and in school.

A key theme emerging from parents night is about being nice to everyone – including on social media.  The majority of parents saying the class group chat is a cause for concern – may I remind you to regularly check your child’s phone as prank calling and cyber bullying are crimes.

What a fast month this has been.  Pupils have been working hard in class to learn the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages.  They have been reminding themselves how to simplify fractions and how to order them.  Pupils have been asked to learn the fractions, decimals and percentages table.

Pupils have been doing a lot of mental maths and it is clear that some pupils are still not yet secure with their times tables, this is more than just counting up in 2s, 4s etc and involves knowing the multiplication and division relationships and to be able to answer a times tables sum as quickly as answering “what is your name?”  Pupils must be revising these, and division, at home whenever possible.

We are excited about our trip to the Forth bridges and have exciting STEM activities planned for this week.  Please remember packed lunches and extremely warm clothing on Thursday.

Pupils should always have a chosen novel for enjoyment in school that they are able to talk about at any time.  The local library has an excellent selection for P7 age.

P7 arrived safely at Dalguise and have already had fun doing a couple of activities.  They are having a ball and are looking forward to the evening events.

There is an ASG camp twitter page where group leaders will tweet news, photos and videos throughout the camp – please follow @lasswadecamp to be kept in the loop.  Signal at Dalguise is limited so this really is the best way.

On Tuesday, pupils should arrive in school from the main entrance and congregate in the expressive arts hall.  The bus hopes to leave Loanhead at 9.30 so pupils should arrive no later than 9am

Please can pupils wear their red hoodies.

No money, electronics, phones or food should be taken to camp and they will be confiscated.

Please give medication to a staff member on arrival.

CAMP MEETING – MONDAY 1  OCTOBER AT BURNBRAE PRIMARY, 7PM

Please remember that we have cross country and Boys Football events this week and forms and payment should be returned ASAP.

Parents Evening times have been handed out, Time is very tight wither night and there is little room to swap appointments,  If your time is not suitable please get in touch to meet me before or after school.

Homework

Pupils have been working on a fact file/personal project on Natural disasters.  They have a check list of THE MINUMUM requirements and, so far, have had 6 hours at school (over the course of last week), as well as home learning last week to get it half complete.  I have extended the Due in date to Wednesday 10th of October.  Pupils know there are high expectations for quality work.  The skill we are working on is note taking and writing these notes up in our own words to create new texts.

I have given out spelling books and pupils have identified the ways that they learn best.  They have spelling contracts at the front of their jotter.  The words are individualised and this week they are words which were mis spelled in our recent test.

NUMARACY- No homework but pupils MUST BE SECURE IN ALL TIMES TABLES which includes knowing the associated  division families eg. 6X4 = 24, 4 X 6 = 24, 24/4=6, 24/6=4 – Pupils should be able to answer these as quickly as they would answer, “what is your name?”

We have been learning about rounding decimals and decimal place value.  We have also been calculating time distances and learning to read train and airport timetables.

HOMEWORK (For Monday)
We have been working on decimals and place value. Pupils can always do extra work on Numeracy using Sumdog, topmarks or nrich.  I will put together a suitable list of websites.
Decimals 10,100,1000 worksheet to be done in new numeracy jotters.
Pupils will have spelling lists to learn – words coming from wrongly spelled words in their writing.
Pupils have also been doing research on who was to blame for the Titanic sinking – although this is not compulsory.
P7 INDOOR SHOES / SCHOOL CLOTHING
Please note that ALL pupils should have indoor shoes to change into.  This week only 7 pupils had a change of shoes.  Also a polite reminder that jogging bottoms are suitable for outdoor P.E. but are not part of our daily school uniform.
P7 Camp Parents Meeting
There will be a parent meeting for Primary Cluster 7 camp at Burnbrae Primary School on Monday 1st October at 7pm. This meeting is for parents only as the school hall is not big enough to accommodate parents and pupils. Mrs Cooney, Miss Maley and Mrs Craig will be accompanying the Primary 7 pupils to camp this year.

We have a busy week this week because not only will we be working hard but we also start our Rugby block on Monday, we have Risk Factory on Wednesday and P7 prefect jobs will be allocated.

Homework:

Maths: From assessing gaps in learning, I have noticed that reading scales has proven challenging for many.  There will be a worksheet that corresponds with in class learning which will be due on Friday.  I have also set a Sumdog challenge and we will be working on numeracy challenges from The Daily Rigour website and topmarks daily 10 https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10 level 4+.

Spelling: continuing from where they left off last year, I plan to hand out spelling word lists this week and the dictation assessment will be Friday.  Pupils will have a variety of options to learn their spelling and will also have words to learn which they have misspelled this week.  The main area of focus is to transfer the spellings learned into written tasks.  I highly recommend the website/game “doorway online” to revise spellings beginning at First-second level and moving onto second http://www.doorwayonline.org.uk/literacy/speller/. 

Reading– We are doing a lot of in class reading activities, but pupils should always have a book to be reading for enjoyment.  The recommendation is to read for at least 20 minutes each night.  This does not need to be read to someone at this stage, but sharing reading with your child – or reading the same book as them and then having some “book chat” will help their enthusiasm and understanding.

We are still looking for donations of construction materials such as lego, Knex, dominos, meccano etc.  We hope to have some STEM/construction activities to get those creative juices flowing in the upper atrium.

Note about P.E. copied from last week’s post

P.E. – Quick note about P.E. and a general hygiene rule mirrored by High Schools.  Pupils MUST have a FULL change of PE clothes – shorts and a top for P.E that are not their daily uniform and supportive sports shoes.  Our classroom is hot and P7 become so attached to their hoodies that they rarely take them off so wearing them to get hot and sweaty in P.E. and then all day is not promoting good personal hygiene.  In P7 it is common for pupils to bring their own roll on or stick deodorant (no aerosols) and pupils are allowed to use these as needed.

House Captains 2019!

Many P7s have waited for this week for years, some with excitement and confidence and others with nerves and anxieties – many not even sure if they want to put themselves forward, but you did it!

I am so impressed with the House Captain speeches this year, not only were there a record number of you who put yourselves forward, but the quality of the speeches were all the best I have seen! We had raps, dance moves, PowerPoints, entrance music and many confident speakers captivating their audiences and energising their team. The children in each house voted for their captains and the votes were counted and announced.
