P7 Info W/B 23rd October 2019

Hi all,

I hope everyone had a nice break. We only have a short week ahead before heading off to camp next Tuesday.

Info for this week:

WednesdayPE – Please can everyone have a full PE kit to change into.

  • No Lunchtime Drawing Club

Friday – Dress Down Day – I realise most P7s will miss our Halloween disco next Thursday due to camp, so it’s up to you if your child would like to dress down and bring a tombola prize as a donation for the disco.

Independent Study Task – Children have chosen which area of World War 2 they would like to research independently. We will plan this properly over the next few days and draw up a timetable for this. I will not send home any maths this week or next. Thanks to all who completed the volume task.

World War 2 Topic –If anyone has a family member who remembers  WW2 as a child and would like to share their stories with us, that would be incredible. We will start to read Carrie’s War in class as our latest novel.

Numeracy – We have formed ‘Times Teams’ in class – a buddy system which focuses on learning our times tables efficiently. This really is a priority as poor knowledge of times tables impacts on so many other areas of numeracy. Maths – We’ll revise time telling using a normal clock face, digital clock and 12/24 hour clock.

Card designs – The annual card design activity is upon us. Children will design a card at school and bring this home for you to view and order a set of cards if you wish. This is a great fundraiser for school funds. **There has been a time extension to this so if anyone still has one to hand in, please do so this week with the correct money please.**

School Camp – The children and I will discuss camp this week and ensure we all are prepared for next week. The countdown is on! If your child is not going to camp, we will discuss what his/her timetable will look like next week too.

Learning Trio Notes – The notes discussed at the Parents’ Meetings should be sent home by Friday.

Clock Change – Just a reminder that the clocks go back one hour this weekend.

Thanks for your support,

Miss S Brunt

Big Maths and Learn-its number progression across all stages

BIG Maths is a teaching approach that makes progress in maths easy and fun. BIG Maths has been extremely successful both nationally and internationally with thousands of children learning through daily BIG Maths ‘CLIC’ sessions and the weekly ‘Beat That!’ challenges.

Big Maths firstly answers the question, ‘How do we get children properly numerate as they journey through school?’ It provides us with an accurate and simple, but highly effective, framework that guarantees numeracy progress. This framework is known as CLIC (Counting, Learn Its, It’s Nothing New and Calculation) and is characterised by accurate steps of progression (known as Progress Drives) that make new learning easy and obvious to children by cashing in on the timeless natural laws of Maths.
BIG Maths is therefore a rigorous, systematic and structured approach that provides children with a fun and lively experience as they learn through jingles, songs, games and the BIG Maths characters.

Big Maths puts the child at the
heart of the learning experience.

Don’t be surprised if your children come home talking about Clic, Pom, Pim, Squigglesworth or Count Fourways.

Big Maths helps children to understand the links between core numeracy (the basic principles that underly all maths) and outer numeracy which is the application of these core principles.

C L I C Sessions

CLIC stands for ‘Counting’, ‘Learn Its’, ‘It’s Nothing New’ and ‘Calculation’. Maths lessons contain each of these elements.

Counting:

Children will count forwards and backwards in all kinds of steps depending on their level e.g. in 1s, 2s, 3s, 6s or even 25s! When practising counting at home with your child, make sure you go forwards and backwards. Don’t always start at 0 – make sure they can count on from 75 to 106 for example.

‘Learn Its’:

‘Learn Its’ are addition facts and times tables facts. There are 72 Learns Its in total; 36 addition Learn Its and 36 multiplication Learn Its. These are facts that children need to learn off by heart, so when they are asked ‘What is 6+4 ?’ they are able to give the answer as quickly as they would be able to tell you their name. As soon as they know 3×5=15 they also know 5×3=15 (This is known as a ‘Switcher’).  It is expected that Pupils will know all their times tables by the end of P5 so we need your help with this!  HAVE A LOOK AT OUR LEARN – ITS PROGRESSION TO SEE HOW YOU CAN HELP AT HOME.

It’s Nothing New:

This is the most important aspect of CLIC. It is the way children become successful andproperly numerate. The idea that 5-things and 3-things are always 8-things is a fundamental concept. Once children understand this concept, we can change the ‘thing’ to other units, e.g. ‘tens’, so that 5 tens + 3 tens = 8 tens. Children begin to learn the concept by counting random unit e.g. bananas, aliens, cats etc. It then becomes much easier to use standard

measures such as ml, m, cm, kg, whilst understanding the underlying number concepts.

Strange phrases such as ‘Jigsaw Numbers’, ‘Smile Multiplication’ and ‘Where’s Mully?’ are all part of this section of Big Maths.

Calculation:

This aspect of CLIC is when the teacher will focus on developing the children’s understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Big Maths maps out which steps children should do in a clear order and helps teachers to identify where to go back to if a child needs extra support.

Let’s meet some of the
BIG Maths Characters!

Big Maths Beat That is a weekly timed test of your child’s Learn Its. The aim is to improve their individual score each time!

Numeracy – We are forming ‘Times Teams’ in class – a buddy system to really focus on learning our times tables efficiently. This really is a priority as poor recall of times tables impacts on so many other areas of numeracy.

World War 2 Topic – On Friday 8th November, P7 will host the Remembrance Assembly. We will start rehearsals for it this week as we have the holiday and school camp coming up between now and then! If anyone has a family member who remembers  WW2 as a child and would like to share their stories with us, that would be incredible.  It would be fabulous to have 4-5 pupils read out family memories at the service, especially with it being 80 years since the start of the war.

P7 Info W/B 30th September 2019

Hi all,

Info for this week:

MondayMusic/Choir

  • Golf (for a group )

Tuesday PE

WednesdayPE

  • Lunchtime Drawing Club

Thursday –     Rugby

Friday – P6 and P7 Rugby Festival; permission slips needed back in ASAP. This is for the whole class.

Independent Study Task – Apologies for no task sent home last week but we were having technical issues with printers and photocopiers! Fingers crossed, normal service resumes this week. A maths task will be sent home on Wednesday, even if the children have to write the task down themselves, like the old days! I will also put a challenge on Sumdog.

World War 2 Topic – This week, P7 will begin to study the history surrounding WW11. If anyone has any photos, memorabilia, artefacts, books or anything relating to WW11 that can be brought in, that would be most helpful. All items will be carefully looked after!

If anyone has a family member who remembers the war as a child and would like to share their stories with us, that would be incredible. My mum has written her memoirs from being a young child in the war years and I’ll share these with the class.

Harvest Appeal – P1 and P2 are hosting the Harvest Assembly soon and have asked for donations of larder items and toiletries to be sent in ASAP. If you have anything you’d like to donate, that would be super. The collected items are divided up and gifted to Women’s Aid.

Water bottles – Can all children come to school with a filled water bottle please. Children are turning up with empty bottles and asking to go to the water fountain in the dining hall to refill. This is causing delays in the morning and can be very disruptive and detrimental to our precious ‘learning minutes’.

Thanks for your support,

Miss S Brunt

Head lice

Hi all,

It’s that time of year again where head lice makes an appearance! Could I ask that parents are aware of this and are checking their child’s hair if they suspect their child has them.

Please ensure it is treated at home until all head lice have cleared to prevent them from spreading. The best time to check for head lice is when your child’s hair is wet and by using a fine nit comb.

Thank you!
