Hi all,

Here follows the homework and events list. It’s going to be a very sporty week for some! We also welcome Miss Dickson back, after a couple of weeks at Uni.

Spelling – continues as normal.

Reading – Thanks to all who completed the reading comprehension task last week. I will set a new reading task on Wednesday. We only have a few pages of Kensuke’s Kingdom to read, to find out what happens at the end! Remember, children should be reading other texts at home, in addition to  set school tasks. 

Numeracy – Another Sumdog Challenge this week. Please try and complete this if possible – the repetition of basic facts is essential. 250 coins to collect!

Events

Monday – Judo taster session and Rugby

Tuesday – A P6 and P7 Cross Country team have been selected to represent the school. Pupils know if they have been chosen. Permission slips ( out on Monday 1st) to be returned by 2nd! Thanks.

Wednesday – Music

Thursday – A visiting theatre group will perform a little bit of Shakespeare.

Football Festival for P6/7 boys. Again, pupils know who is involved and have already returned slips, thank you.

PE for the remaining group.

Friday – P6 will share some of their learning with fellow school pupils at assembly – we intend to share experiences gained by studying Kensuke’s Kingdom.

Parents Night  Appointment Times – slips with times were handed out to everyone present last Friday so check with your child if you haven’t seen yours yet!

Here is the weekly update.

RUGBY – continues on Monday.

PE will be on Thursday.

Spelling – Can children please have their previous week’s homework finished, ready to hand in each Monday. Thanks.

Reading – We are about two thirds through Kensuke’s Kingdom in class and overall, the feedback from children has been very enthusiastic.

As a separate reading task, children will get a reading comprehension sheet home ( probably Wednesday) to develop their skills.

Numeracy – Well done to all those who took part in Sumdog last week. Everyone has a new challenge this week. Good luck!

Parent Appointment Slip – if you haven’t already, can you fill this in please. We hope to send home appointment times on Friday.

Indoor Shoes – just another reminder that all children should have a pair of indoor shoes to change into. Thanks.

Here follows the homework and news for the week ahead.

Spelling – continue as normal with a new list of words.

Reading – We are over midway through Kensuke’s Kingdom in class and will  work on specific reading comprehension skills this week. Please encourage your child to read something else for pleasure at least 5 times per week. Thanks.

Numeracy – SUMDOG – National Contest results .Congratulations to a P6 pupil ( identity to be revealed on Monday!) who came 559^th in the National Maths Contest last week! To put this into perspective, 78,624 pupils across Scotland took part, answering between them over 20 million questions! So, to beat over 78, 000 other students in one week is pretty impressive! This person answered 926 questions with an average speed for each one of 2.6 seconds.  Well done!

This week, back to a new challenge within the class! Kee-eeeeep Maths-ing P6!

Other news

RUGBY continues on Monday. PE with myself on Thursday. Last week P6 loved an ‘island survival’ themed PE session, linked to Kensukes’ Kingdom so we’ll develop that this Thursday .

S.T.E.M ( Science Technology Engineering Maths) P6 will have at least one  session per week working on these aspects. Currently we’ve been exploring chain reactions with objects, the classic one being a row of dominoes knocking the next one over. We’ll try and develop this in the next couple of weeks and build up the challenge level. Even the simplest task involves much discussion about forces , observations, making fair tests, recording results, improving designs and so on. P6 seem to love this and vital life skills of co-operation, teamwork, perseverance, talking and listening were very much in evidence. Children were also including Word of the Day vocabulary in their explanations eg. The timing was crucial…we had to improvise…we had to show discipline!

 P6 Meetings and P6’s Got Talent!

The final 40 minutes of the week on a Friday have been set aside for a class meeting. Here we can discuss the week that’s gone by and update all for the following week ahead. We also have a slot for anyone who wants to entertain us by showing off a hidden talent! This is a low key affair, it’s not meant to be anything grand but we’ll pick the ‘acts’ before each Friday so a wee bit of  practice can take place.

 Housekeeping

 Uniform – a gentle reminder that children should be wearing school uniform – our colours are green and black.  Not all children are coming into class with indoor shoes. I’ll try and check up on this further, especially as the weather is wetter and muddy footprints over indoor floors are not desirable!

It’s the fourth week already. Time is  flying by!

**SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHER ON WEDNESDAY**

Homework this week:

Spelling –Children copy down their new spelling words each Monday morning. I’ll try my best to check these but could an adult also check their spelling homework once complete, to avoid errors. Well done to all those children trying hard to write neatly and in cursive.

Reading – We are going to read chapters 4 and 5 of Kensuke’s Kingdom, the exciting part where the main character, Michael, gets stranded on an island with his dog. We will continue reading and writing about this in class.  Please encourage your child to read something of their own for interest and pleasure throughout the week too. Can children also bring in a book to read in class please.

Numeracy – We have been revising tables and linking facts. When children are very secure in knowing their tables, this will help them with other aspects such as division, fractions and decimals. We are now doing sets of ‘Daily 10’ arithmetic questions using Top Marks Level 3 Multiplication. If your child can access this at home, I’d recommend this for fast recall of basic facts.

There’s a national Maths Week Contest on Sumdog, running from the 7^th -14^th September so I’ve entered our class. I think it tests a range of skills and knowledge. Good luck all!

Every Thursday, we concentrate on problem solving strategies so children are learning to use the following: making lists; drawing it out; guess, check, improve; try a simpler case; follow a pattern; acting it out. Children are then asked to explain the strategy they used.

Word of the Day – hopefully children have talked about this at home. Each day, a new word is put on the board and defined. If the children use this word correctly during the day, they get a point on their chart. Some examples so far include sophisticated, crucial and excruciating! This is a great way to extend children’s vocabulary.

RUGBY continues this Monday with Bradley, a youth coach from Lasswade RFC. Sadly there’ll be no PE on Tuesdays for the rest of the term but due to the nice weather and ease of access, P6 have been enjoying extra games of outdoor basketball on Wednesday afternoons. Hopefully this can continue.

PE – Thursday – Can everyone bring a full kit please.

 Congratulations to those who were selected to be on committees! You know who you are!

 Finally, can everyone make sure they have indoor shoes, especially now the weather is turning a bit.

Homework this week:

Spelling – Everyone will get a new list of words this week so should choose an activity from the spelling grid to do. Children can choose a second task to do if they wish. Due in next Tuesday please.

Reading – We have read the first chapter of Kensuke’s Kingdom and came up with lots of pros and cons about whether sailing around the world would be a good idea. We will continue reading this in class.

I have set up a wildlife and nature table which has magazines from the RSPB and Scottish Wildlife Trust on. Some children said they could bring old National Geographic mags so anything else similar to this would be very welcome.

PE – Tuesday and Thursday

Application Forms – Eco Committee, Pupil Council and Health & Wellbeing forms need to be in by Tuesday. Interviews are on Thursday afternoon. In P6, two Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) will also be chosen but no forms are needed for this.

Donations wanted! The Upper Atrium is putting out an appeal for donations of unwanted construction kits such as Lego, Meccano and  K-nex. As you are aware, these kits are very expensive to buy new so we would like to build up a bank of resources for technology activities as quickly and cheaply as possible!! Any donations much appreciated.

Hi all,

Everyone settled in well to their first week in P6, although may have been a tad tired towards the end!

P6 Homework Information

Reading

Over the next few weeks, P6  will undertake a novel study of a Michael Morpurgo book called ‘ Kensuke’s Kingdom’. This will lend itself to many varied and in-depth activities involving the four literacy capacities of reading, writing, talking and listening. We will read this together in class and therefore, no reading book will be sent home. Children should continue to read for pleasure, texts of their choice at home, such as books, comics or magazines. It would also be great if children could bring in a text of their choice to read in class when they have time.

Spelling

Spelling homework will continue much the same  as in P5. Children will have a focus spelling list to learn and show they can transfer this learning into their literacy with confidence and accuracy. Homework will be issued Tuesday to Tuesday so gives everyone a full week, including a weekend, to complete tasks. Thanks to all who managed to cover their spelling jotters.  More information to follow.

Maths/Numeracy

There will be a maths or numeracy homework task most weeks so please refer to this class page on our website for weekly updates. This week I have set a straightforward Sumdog Challenge  ( #1 P6 Tables x 2 3 4 5 August 2018) which just revises the lower tables. If you cannot access this at home, please let me know.

Welcome back P6!

I hope everyone had a fantastic summer and is feeling refreshed and prepared for the new term. The classroom is set up, ready for everyone to come into.

The first week back after the summer break always brings fresh challenges – getting used to a new classroom, a new teacher, new routines, new everything! Thus, we’ll gently ease ourselves into the P6 routine this week and so, there will be no homework set until next week.

Now for a few ‘housekeeping’ requests – Can pupils please try and bring;

–          A pencil case with writing pencils, coloured pens/pencils, rubber, sharpener and if possible, a glue stick and a ruler.

–          A  book, comic or magazine for personal reading ( no worries if not, we do have a library)

–          A full PE kit for Tuesdays and Thursdays.

–          A healthy snack and a filled water bottle

–          A packed lunch or school dinner paid for through ParentPay

If children must bring a phone, it should be handed in to me first thing to be locked away for safe keeping before being handed back at the end of the day. Children really shouldn’t be bringing any  other valuable items with them to school.

Finally, I’d like to welcome Miss Dickson, a  teaching student, to P6. Miss Dickson will be working with us until February 2019!
