Homework this week:

Spelling – There’s a new spelling list this week plus loose and lose.

Writing – 500 words. The annual Radio 2 writing competition is upon us and closes on the 8^th March so there’s not much time for us budding authors to get our stories written. I’d like this to be a flexible home/school task whereby children will get ample time in school to work on this and can  save their text onto USB sticks or I can email stories back and forth so that these can be worked on at home too.

Reading – Everyone will read for a minimum of 20 minutes per day in class.

Debates – We are going to have a 6 week block, developing debating skills. There will be 3 lots of 2 week topic blocks. In each topic block, the first week will involve some preparation work at home followed by the second week when the debate will take place. More information will follow on Tuesday.

Ski-ing –  Wednesday. Children should bring their ski-ing gear with them to change into at school before we leave on the bus (after break). Please note that children should bring a packed lunch as we return to school after the dining room has closed. Children have progressed quickly and are now enjoying being able to use the tow lift to go higher up the slope each week.

Peer Mediation – P6 are all set to go this week. Two people will be chosen each day to be Peer Mediators in the playground at lunch times for P1 –P6. The mediators have their script ready and have enjoyed practising through role play.

PE – Tuesday  and Thursday

Finally, last week was Science Week. We had a workshop from Generation Science where we had to test which substances had the most fizzy and colourful reactions. We also learned a bit about the pH scale. Later on in the week, we did some experiments with water/oil and milk/ food colouring and washing up liquid. The children gave a lot of positive feedback about all their activities.

Welcome back!

This week is designated Science Week.

On Monday, P6 will have a visiting science workshop and the topic is called Fizz, Bang, Boom! Over the week, we will remind ourselves about fair testing, develop lots of science skills and finish off some of the bridge work from before the holidays.

Homework this week:

Spelling – There’s a new spelling list this week plus hear and here.

Pupil Talk – Well done P6. Everyone overcame their initial nerves to deliver a talk about a Scottish pioneer. These were interesting and very informative. This term, as part of our Talking and Listening development, we’ll have a go at holding debates about different topics. More info to follow next week which will involve some reading and research at home.

Spelling – There’s a new spelling list this week plus through and threw

Pupil Talk – Everyone will present their Pupil Talk this week. Children have had ample opportunity to prepare in school time as well as at home so we are really looking forward to finding out more about Scottish pioneers. Remember, it’s the delivery of the talk we are looking at e.g. confidence, be  loud and clear, be interesting, show audience awareness and show good eye contact. Remember to organise an audience participation activity for the end of your talk. Good luck P6!

Reading – all pupils had a chance to select an extra library book so all have something to read in class.

Numeracy – Sumdog Challenge on division. Can I ask that children practise their weaker times tables whenever they can – even five minutes a day would help. Children should be able to say which times tables they need to practise.  It is vital children have fast recall but even more importantly, that they can link their tables across numeracy to division, fractions and so on. There are plenty of online games to use too and I would suggest looking at Top Marks ( Learning Games) 9-11 age group for this. P6 are familiar with this. There’s even a mental maths section, Daily 10, which has plenty of drills on most numerical operations.

Mandarin – P6 are now starting to learn Mandarin from a specialist teacher.

PE – Tuesday  and Thursday

Bridges trip – Last week, P6 and P7 visited the Forth Bridge Contact and Education Centre. The morning consisted of working together as a team to construct a room height pyramid using dowelling rods and elastic bands. Each child had their own component part to construct which then was put into a larger pyramid then finally, all these larger structures came together to form the mega structure at the end. The co-operation, communication and listening skills shown by all pupils was admirable. We did manage a walk along the Forth Road Bridge in the afternoon, but the views were dismal as unfortunately, the weather was not being kind and the sea mist kept flitting in and out over the bridges.  Anyway, overall, it was a very successful trip and the positive feedback from the children made it all worthwhile.

Term breaks on Friday for the February week. School finishes as normal at 12:25pm.

Finally – the time has come to say goodbye to Miss Dickson who leaves P6 to start placements in school with younger pupils after the holiday. Miss Dickson has been with us since August so it will be strange without her but on behalf of myself and P6, we give thanks for all her hard work and wish her the best moving forward. We will see you around!

Home Learning this week:

Spelling – There’s a new spelling list this week plus of and off

Pupil Talk – Many children have shown great enthusiasm for this task already so we really look forward to hearing and watching the finished presentations in the final week.

All children have access to computers throughout the week to continue their research. At home, start practising presentations.

Reading – Last week, all pupils had a chance  to select an extra library book so everyone now has something to read in class.

PE – Tuesday  – I’ve noticed there’s an increasing number of children who do not bring a full or even partial PE kit with them. I’m going to discuss with P6 the importance of having a fresh change of clothes for PE, especially as they are maturing!

Sportshall Athletics on Tuesday – Those pupils chosen to go must  return their permission slip dated Tuesday 29^th January. Thanks.

Bridges trip – Thursday  –  Part of the trip includes a walk across the old Forth Road Bridge. Children really should wear warm, protective clothes, including hats, scarves, and gloves. Looking ahead at the weather forecast, it is going to be extremely cold; factor in the openness and elevation, it may feel very bitter and exposed!  All children need to bring a snack and a packed lunch. Cost is £3. Permission slips must be returned ASAP.

Peer Mediation – P6 have now been trained in Peer Mediation and have been invited to volunteer to take turns to mediate in the playground. Peer Mediators act as listeners to opposing parties in disputes and can help to find solutions to minor disagreements. They are not ‘playground police’ or replacing adult supervision/intervention.

Parents Meetings – your child should have given you an appointment time to see me next week ( Wed 6th or Thurs 7th February). If you have not seen this slip, ask your child to check their bags please. If someone was off on the day these slips went out and didn’t get theirs, can you let me know.

Poetry– Everyone has been given a Burns or Scottish poem to learn to recite. Well done to all those pupils who have recited so far. There are still a few to be heard this week.

Pupil Talk – Many children have shown great enthusiasm for this task already so we really look forward to hearing and watching the finished presentations in the final week.

PE – Tuesday and Thursday – I’ve noticed there’s an increasing number of children who do not bring a full or even partial PE kit with them. I’m going to discuss with P6 the importance of having a fresh change of clothes for PE, especially as they are maturing!

On a similar note, there are many children who do not have (or say they do not have!) indoor shoes. I have suggested that even a pair of slippers would count as indoor shoes if that would encourage them to bring in a change of footwear.

Reading – There will be no reading book home. However, can children please bring in reading material that they enjoying reading as we will have time set aside for personal reading.

Poetry– Everyone has been given a Burns or Scottish poem to learn to recite. Two children from each year group will be selected to recite their poem at a special assembly towards the end of January. Children should be ready to read or recite their poems by Thursday 17^th (this Thursday!)

Pupil Talk – Miss Dickson is organising pupil talks this term. We have selected 15 Scottish inventors and pioneers. The class will be split into 2 x 15 groups. Therefore, 2 people will be researching the same person. Children only have to present their talk to their group, not the whole class.

Some of the people we’ve selected to research are very well known and famous for their inventions, others are less well known but were nevertheless pioneers in their own field of work.

More information will follow this week. Pupil talks will be held in the final week before the February break.

WOOL APPEAL – Do you have any old wool/yarn/embroidery threads you could donate? We need lots as we’re going to be making items to sell to raise money for our Eco-committee. The more bright and colourful the better! Oh, and any beads would also be gratefully received.

PE – MONDAY (for one week only) and Thursday as normal.

Hi all,

Welcome back P6! I hope everyone enjoyed their time off school and will be looking forward to a very busy, fun term. Thank you so much for all my lovely Christmas presents.

Overview

The first week back is Scottish Week across the school. However, P6 will continue the theme for the rest of this short term. The four focus areas will be:

• Learning and reciting a Scottish poem
• Preparing and delivering a pupil talk about a Scottish inventor or pioneer
• Studying a historical topic; in this case, the Jacobites
• A trip to the Forth Bridges as a mini ‘STEAM’ topic at the end of January

In addition to all this, we begin our block of ski-ing and will  have weekly lessons from a visiting Mandarin teacher!

Week beginning Tuesday 8^th January

Spelling – To consolidate the spelling from last term, there will be no new spelling list this week. However, there will be a revision sheet on they’re, there and their sent home.

Reading – There will be no reading book home. However, children must bring in reading material that they enjoying reading in school as we will have set aside time for personal reading. In addition, we will be practising comprehension skills in class and children will put these into practice when researching their pupil talk.

Poetry– Everyone will be given a Burns or Scottish poem to learn to recite. Two children from each year group will be selected to recite their poem at a special assembly towards the end of January. Children should be ready to read/recite their poem by Thursday 17th January.

Numeracy – It is vital that children know their times tables or have strategies to quickly work these out ( not using technology!) Numeracy homework will consist of tables practice. This will start next week. This week, there is a Sumdog challenge.

PE – Tuesday and Thursday

Finally, a reminder that children should have a pair of indoor shoes to change into.

Hi all,

It’s the final countdown…a fun packed week awaits!

This week:

There will be no homework this week but on Monday, I will collect in all spelling jotters, reading journals and reading books.

The first week back in 2019 is designated as Scottish Week. There will be a Burns poem for everyone to learn and recite. Children will have 2-3 weeks to prepare a pupil talk on a Scottish theme and our main project will be based on the Jacobite period.

PE – Can children have their kit in all week please as the halls’ timetables are temporarily suspended due to both schools requiring show practices. At the end of the week, children will be asked to bring home their PE kit for washing.

P3-7 Concert – We think that everyone now has something to wear for the concert; thanks to those who brought their own costumes in. Everyone will dress up for our rehearsal on Monday. The actual concert is on Tuesday afternoon at 13:45. One family member per family is welcome to spectate.

Party – Our Xmas party is on Thursday afternoon. There are quite a few children still to pay £2 towards this. Children may bring party clothes to change into before the party commences.

House Singing Competition – This week, the P7 house captains will be teaching their house teams a Christmas song to perform in school ( to pupils only) on Thursday – who will win this year?

Church on Friday – Food Bank Donation -The school will have a Christmas assembly with Mr Duffin at his church, commencing around 09:30. Children have been asked to bring one item to donate to a local foodbank; children will carry their item up to church for the collection there.

School finishes at 12 noon. Pupils resume Tuesday 8^th January 2019.
