Primary 3 Homework – 29^th May to 4^th June

On 5^th June we are celebrating the 10^th birthday of Ramsay Campus. A note about this went home on Friday, but in the happy rush of the Summer Fair some were left behind. If you would like another copy then please let me know.

Numeracy

Pupils have got to grips with reading measurements from different equipment, but quite a few are still shaky on remembering the different units.

Confusions to watch out for:

• The game talks about “mass” and “capacity” which are strictly the correct terms, but we have also talked in class about “weight” and “volume”.
• The game requires you to spell the whole words for units (e.g. “kilograms” rather than just “kg”) and we have not practised this very much (see spelling below).

Primary 3 Homework – 22^nd May to 28^th May

Now that the pupils have built up their Powerpoint skills they are making presentations about a subject of their own choice. This has involved learning about online image searches. Within school we have a secure filter system to prevent inappropriate results from showing up. If the children are searching at home, however, you may need to keep an eye on this activity. Online safety is something we talk abut as a class, but I thought it would be worth flagging this up to parents also.

Numeracy

To finish our work on measure we are looking at volume (this week) and area (next week).

At home, can you find, draw and label:

            Something that has a volume less than 500ml

            Something that has a volume between 500ml and 1l.

            Something that has a volume of 1l or more.

Use a kitchen jug to practise measuring out:

Primary 3 Homework – 15^th May to 21^st May

In ICT the P3 pupils have been doing fantastic work making presentations on Microsoft Powerpoint. If you would like to see your child’s presentation, please send me in an e-mail address.

In art we are beginning a short project looking at L. S. Lowry.

On Friday the children have the option to ‘dress down’ in aid of the Parent Council’s Summer Fair on 25^th May. Rather than bringing money, anyone who wants to dress down is asked to bring a prize for the tombola. The prizes don’t need to be expensive at all and pre-loved items are very welcome.

Numeracy

We are moving on to weight this week, weighing ourselves and all sorts of other things in class using different kinds of scales.

At home, please can you find and draw objects that weigh:

• Less than 50g
• Between 100g and 500g
• More than 1kg

You could use kitchen scales, or food packaging usually has a weight on it.

If the children enjoyed the time game from last week, our final lessons on time should take us up to playing this at level 4.

Numeracy

For numeracy I have sent home old Beat That challenges. This will let you see what we do. It would be great to put in a final burst of practice so that everyone can end the year at a high point. A few of the children have plateaued and just need a bit more practice to push up to the next level. The questions at each level are the same every week but in a different order.

Please keep asking children to tell you the time. It is also useful to get them converting between analogue to digital. Most pupils should be solid on o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past (12 hour clock). This week we will make the last step into dealing with ten past, twenty to etc. and AM / PM.

I would suggest playing at level 2 or 3 to start with. Hopefully we can play at 4 as the week goes on.

Primary 3 Homework – 1^st May to 8^th May

A big thanks to those who helped with our class walk on Wednesday looking at houses in Loanhead. Pupils are now using the photos they took to make Powerpoint presentations.

In maths we are moving on from fractions to look at measure. Having started with a brief recap of time, we will move onto length and then weight.

Numeracy

Wherever you see an analogue or digital clock, please get the children to say what the time is.

I have also set a measure-themed SumDog challenge. Please note that SumDog adjusts its level of difficulty as individuals play. This can lead to questions getting harder if pupils do well. If the questions get too hard, mistakes will then bring it down.

Measuring lengths – Look around the house and pick things that you estimate are 10cm, 30cm and 1m. Then measure them to see what length they really are. (If anyone needs to borrow a ruler let me know.)  Draw and write to show what you did. For example:

“I thought my mug was 10cm high, but really it was 18cm.”

On Thursdays, any literacy quizzes that have not been finished in class will start coming home for completion. These are based on the reading books and work on key skills.

On Mondays I am having to write the next week’s reading homework onto grids. This is a because of a change in our P.E. times for the next few weeks, meaning I don’t have any time out of class to do this on Tuesdays as before. If on a Monday night, therefore, you see a book on the reading grid that your child does not yet have, please don’t worry about this. That will be the new book coming home the following day.

Primary 3 Homework – 24^th April to 1^st May

On Wednesday afternoon we will be going for our walk around Loanhead, finding different kinds of houses and spotting ways that homes have been made energy efficient.

This week I would particularly highlight the numeracy game mentioned below. We have been working on this in class and everyone seems keen to have more shots without having to take turns with the rest of the class!

Moving on in our work on fractions, we have been identifying different fractions of shapes and grids.

To help with this, the children can play a game called Fractions Flags.

This game can be tricky, but with support the children should get the hang of it and end up with some amazing creations!

Reading

Reading grids will come home today. Please look out also for comprehension quizzes to be finished.

Some pupils have been racing ahead and finishing their books in class time. If this happens, please can I recommend that you still hear them reading pages out loud at home. The practice of sounding out word and allowing reading to be guided by the punctuation is very valuable.

Primary 3 Homework – 18^th to 24^th April

It was great to have P3 back yesterday, all ready for the new term!

We started our new topic looking at houses and homes. As part of this, would anyone be free to help on Wednesday or Thursday next week? We want to walk round Loanhead, spotting some of the things we’ve been learning about. Please let me know if you or another relative / carer could come with us. It would be from 2pm to 3pm (so just before normal pick up time) on either on Wednesday 25^th or Thursday 26^th.

This term I will teach P3 on Mondays as well as the rest of the week. Mrs Wallace will be with other classes. Homework will continue to run Tuesday to Tuesday. Our regular P.E. days will be Tuesday and Wednesday, with music on a Monday.

After the Easter break our maths brains will need a bit of warming up. Number bonds tennis (to 10) is important practice, as are Learnits and the +/- games.

We have been learning about all the different kinds of buildings that people live in. In particular, we have focussed on flats, cottages, detached houses, semi-detached, terraced houses and bungalows.

Primary 3 Homework – Week from 20^th March

This week in class we are going to be doing some literacy assessments. These are intended to identify gaps in understanding so that we know what to focus on next term.

Numeracy

We are looking back at lots of areas of numeracy work, ahead of maths assessments next week. Anything you want to choose from the following list will therefore be helpful reinforcement.

1. Fractions puzzle

Jane ate half a pizza. Kate ate two quarters of a pizza. Who ate more? (Hint: It may be helpful to draw a picture.)

Sally ate three pieces of pizza that were all the same size. In the end she had eaten the same amount as Jane. What fraction of a pizza must each of Sally’s slices have been?

2. Time puzzle

Mike went to bed at eight o’clock. Draw what his bedroom clock would have looked like.

Mike has a little brother called Alf. Alf goes to bed two hours before Mike does. Draw the time that would have been showing on the clock at Alf’s bedtime.

Reading

Pages from class books to be read at home will be written down in the grids as usual.

Instead of simply carrying on up to a certain page for the first part of this week’s reading homework, some of the children are being asked to choose just one page, and practice reading this with expression. Please look out for a comment on reading grids to see if this applies.
