P2 Homework w.b. 4.3.19

March already, can you believe it?!?

We are beginning our Fairyland topic this coming week which will be very, very exciting! The friendly dragon may have left something for the children on Monday…

This term we are also focusing on having a growth mindset! It is really important that children are able to value and learn from their mistakes as this will expand their learning and perseverance.

We begin our sessions of rugby tomorrow afternoon – please make sure that your child has indoor/gym shoes and a full p.e kit to take part.

Homework for this week:

Reading: Please check your child’s green reading records for the pages to be read for that night. I can’t emphasise how important it is for the children to be doing their reading homework. The more children read the wider their vocabulary will become!

Spelling: This week is the “ea” sound, such as head, ready and instead. Please encourage your child to write these words in cursive handwriting if they feel ready.

Phonics: The children will have a phonics worksheet to complete, it has a mixture of sounds on it. As this is an additional task, it does not have to be handed in until the following Monday.

Thank you,

Miss Lauren Waller

ONLINE AND COMPUTER SAFETY UPDATE

Safety Online!

Screen Addiction

e-Safety is an important part of keeping children safe at Loanhead Primary School . We have extensive security measures in place in school, which are monitored both internally and externally, to help safeguard pupils from potential dangers or unsuitable material. Any e-Safety incidents are recorded and managed.  e-Safety is taught to all pupils explaining and demonstrating how to stay safe and behave appropriately online.

We can only be successful in keeping children safe online if we work with parents to ensure the e-Safety message is consistent. It is important that parents speak to their children about how they can keep safe and behave appropriately online.

Recently, many of the children have been talking about the Momo challenge and have been increasingly worried about it.  Like many of these online phenomenon the publicity and hype has made this a lot bigger than it needs to be.  For a quick briefing on it see the link below.

MOMO INFO

It’s essential to be realistic – banning the internet or technology will not work and it often makes a child less likely to report a problem. Education around safe use is essential.

P2 Homework w.b. 25.2.19

Hello!

Well, we had such a fun science week! We had our ‘Ready, Teddy, Go!’ workshop on Monday where we learned all about forces. Then we have been working in teams for our STEM activities – designing an umbrella and an egg basket from a range of materials. P1 and P2 were put into groups on Wednesday and were given a range of materials to choose from to make an egg basket that would transport mini eggs safely down a zip line – this was A LOT of fun! To end the week, we created our own volcanoes on Friday and it was very exciting when the ‘lava’ overflowed everywhere.

We will be continuing to look at energy and electricity next week. Additionally, P1/2 will be doing a joint topic ‘Fairyland’ in the coming weeks.

Homework for the coming week:

Reading: Please check your child’s green reading record for the pages to be read that night. I am looking to incorporate more independent reading time in the class, so children are more than welcome to bring their own books in for this. If anyone has any pre-loved magazines/comics etc. that they no longer need then P2 would really appreciate these being added to the class library!

Spelling: This week we will be learning the ‘ay’ sound. The spelling list will contain words with this sound, for example, May, away, Monday. We are practising writing in cursive, please encourage your child to practise some of their words in cursive handwriting if they want to.

Maths: Children are continuing to learn about money with me and Mrs Wallace is moving onto learning about measure this term. This week the children will have a money worksheet to complete for homework. As this is an additional task the children will have until Monday to complete it. If you wish to do this over the weekend, please could you take it out of your child’s bookbag as I leave them in school on Friday so I can organize homework for the following week. Thank you.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend and I will see you on Monday!

P2 Homework w.b. 18.2.19

Hi all,

I hope you had a fun and restful holiday and are ready to return for the new week! We are learning lots of fun things this week as it is SCIENCE WEEK!

This morning (Monday), the children have a science workshop and we will be following this on throughout the week through learning about energy and electricity.

Homework for this week;

Reading: Every group is receiving a new book so please check your child’s green reading records for the pages. Please encourage your child to read a wide variety of genres, this can be anything from non-fiction to joke books! If they have a book they are really enjoying then they can bring it into school to read during calm time.

Spelling: We are learning no new sounds this week, instead we will be revising all of the ones we have been learning in P2. However, the children will receive a spelling list of the days of the week to practise.

Writing: Before the holidays, the children were learning about instructional writing and we wrote a recipe for making a jam sandwich. For Monday, the children have their own recipe template and they can make up their own recipe for something or can write one that they know works. We might try and make some of the creations next week!

Thank you so much for all of your support so far in P2. I hope you all have a lovely week,

Miss Lauren Waller

P2 Homework w.b 4.2.19

Hi all,

Parents evening is this week, Wednesday 6th (5:30-8:30) and Thursday 7th (3:30-5:30). Please return your slip if you have not already, they were put into children’s bookbags. If you are unable to make the appointment, then please let the school office know and they can sort something for you.

Homework for this week:

Reading: All of the reading groups have moved up a stage, so the books may be a little more challenging, to begin with, but they are all ready for the move up. Please check your child’s green reading record for the pages they have to read that night.

Spelling: This week we are learning the ‘wh’ sound, for example, whisper and whale. The spelling list this week contains words with this sound and tricky words.

After the holidays, I will alternate each week between numeracy, phonics and writing homework. For example, one week will be a writing task and the next week will be a phonics task etc. With this extra task, the children will have until the following Monday to complete it.

Just a reminder that we break up for the holidays this Friday 8th February at the normal time, 12:25pm.

Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday and Thursday evening,

Miss Lauren Waller

P2 Homework w.b. 28.1.19

Hi all,

All the children received their parent appointment slips last week, please check  your child’s book bag for these slips.

Homework for this week;

Spelling: This is our last week of bossy ‘e’ and the sound is u_e. The spelling list this week will contain this sound and tricky words. Remember that children can practise these in a number of ways – writing them in pencil or paint, using magnetic letters to make them or even writing silly sentences with them!

Reading: Please check your child’s green reading record for these pages. Children may be moving up to the next stage in their books over the next few weeks.

Writing: The children wrote some lovely stories about what their favourite pet is last week. There will be another writing sheet sent out on Tuesday and can be returned on the following Monday. If your child is going to complete this over the weekend then I suggest it gets taken out of the book bag as I don’t send them home on a Friday. This weeks writing will be ‘If I were the teacher, I would be’. Please encourage your child to use cursive handwriting as we are practising to use this in class.

Thank you,

Miss Lauren Waller

P2 Homework w.b. 21.1.19

Hello!

Well done to all the children who took the time to learn one of the Scottish poems that I sent home last week, it was lovely to hear them recite it to the class!

Homework for the week:

Reading – Please check your child’s reading record for the pages that have to be read that night. Alongside their reading book, please encourage your child to read something that they enjoy too. Fluency and confidence in reading improves with the more children read.

Spelling – We are continuing to learn about bossy ‘e’, with our sound o_e this week. Spelling lists will contain words with this sound.

Writing – To support the children in expanding their vocabulary within their writing, I will be giving out a writing task each week. This will also go out on Tuesday but does not have to be back until Monday of the following week. I will also give the children a jotter to complete this work in.

Thank you for all your support in this new term.

Have a lovely week!

Miss Lauren Waller

P2 Homework w.b. 14.1.19

Hi all,

Homework will be sent out this week – as usual, it will go out on Tuesday and should be completed by Friday.

Reading: The pages will be written into your child’s reading record. I write the whole week of reading into these records so please check the date on the night you are reading.

Spelling: On Monday the children will recap bossy ‘e’ with a (a_e) and then we will move on to bossy e with i (i_e). Spelling lists this week will contain i_e words and tricky words.

Poetry: The children will also bring home a Scots poem to learn for the end of the week. On Monday there will be two poems that the children can choose from and take home to learn. On Friday the children will recite their poems to class and two pupils will then be chosen to represent P2 in the Scottish Poetry Competition at the school assembly on Friday 25th January.

If anyone has any clean and empty packaging boxes that P1/2 could use for junk modelling then it would be greatly appreciated!! The children love making things out of old cereal boxes, yoghurt pots etc. Thank you.

PE this week will be on Monday instead of Tuesday but it will go back to Tuesday next week!

Have a lovely week,

Miss Lauren Waller
