P2 Homework w.b. 4.3.19

March already, can you believe it?!?

We are beginning our Fairyland topic this coming week which will be very, very exciting! The friendly dragon may have left something for the children on Monday…

This term we are also focusing on having a growth mindset! It is really important that children are able to value and learn from their mistakes as this will expand their learning and perseverance.

We begin our sessions of rugby tomorrow afternoon – please make sure that your child has indoor/gym shoes and a full p.e kit to take part.

Homework for this week:

Reading: Please check your child’s green reading records for the pages to be read for that night. I can’t emphasise how important it is for the children to be doing their reading homework. The more children read the wider their vocabulary will become!

Spelling: This week is the “ea” sound, such as head, ready and instead. Please encourage your child to write these words in cursive handwriting if they feel ready.

Phonics: The children will have a phonics worksheet to complete, it has a mixture of sounds on it. As this is an additional task, it does not have to be handed in until the following Monday.

Thank you,

Miss Lauren Waller

p3 Homework week beginning 4/3/19

Hi all,

Big apologies for the lack of post last week. As p3 know I can be a little bit silly and I realised I have written last weeks post and clicked save as draft instead of  publish! I didn’t even notice until now as I write this weeks. So once again apologies.

Request

P3 have been learning all about measure and having covered weight and length we are now looking at capacity. A fun activity we are looking to do is to create our very own lava lamps. Similarly we are building lots of models to further our learning in our new ‘Human Body’ topic. If you have any plastic bottles (of any size) at home or glass jars (don’t have to have lids) I would really appreciate if you could donate them to us to help us with our active learning.

Homework

Many of the children’s homework jotters went home unmarked as they weren’t handed in on Monday. I will look over them and mark them this coming Monday if they are handed in.

Literacy

This weeks spelling sounds are is ‘ou’ and ‘ow ‘ as in ‘cloud’ and ‘crowd’ found on list 21 of the spelling sheet . However spelling homework this week is optional. In its place I have sent home a reading for understanding worksheet based on the children’s fairy tale ‘The Enormous Turnip’. Reading for understanding is equally if not more important as reading for fluency. In class, many children have been finding this type of work particularly challenging therefore I will be sending home a new one each week for the next few weeks to give the children more experience doing this.

Maths

As normal select a task from the home learning wall. Please remember to colour in tasks after you have done them so I can see what you have done at home and know when to issue a new home learning wall.

New numeracy learning walls next week!

ONLINE AND COMPUTER SAFETY UPDATE

Safety Online!

Screen Addiction

e-Safety is an important part of keeping children safe at Loanhead Primary School . We have extensive security measures in place in school, which are monitored both internally and externally, to help safeguard pupils from potential dangers or unsuitable material. Any e-Safety incidents are recorded and managed.  e-Safety is taught to all pupils explaining and demonstrating how to stay safe and behave appropriately online.

We can only be successful in keeping children safe online if we work with parents to ensure the e-Safety message is consistent. It is important that parents speak to their children about how they can keep safe and behave appropriately online.

Recently, many of the children have been talking about the Momo challenge and have been increasingly worried about it.  Like many of these online phenomenon the publicity and hype has made this a lot bigger than it needs to be.  For a quick briefing on it see the link below.

MOMO INFO

It’s essential to be realistic – banning the internet or technology will not work and it often makes a child less likely to report a problem. Education around safe use is essential.

Primary 4 Homework 25/02/19

I’ve had a lovely first week with the class, we have revisited the class charter and talked about what we would like our class to be like. The children wanted these things to feature in our class charter:

We will care for each other and be kind to each other.

We will be calm and quiet which helps us to listen, concentrate and learn.

We will speak calmly to each other.

We will be respectful to everyone.

We will listen to each other.

We will try and resolve problems with our friends ourselves (we know we can ask adults for help if we need it).

We will follow instructions.

I will post homework on the website every week. I intend to set homework on Mondays and would like it in on Fridays.

This week children have reading which is noted in their reading diaries. Please make sure you sign your child’s reading record when completed and that your child has their reading book and diary every day as they will read daily.

Spelling: As listed in their homework jotters: list of words, to make sentences and learn the words in the way your child prefers.

Every child has their Sumdog password now.

Topic this term: We will be learning about Climate Zones and Weather. We will also be looking at Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his art work.

We will also be covering some Science this term.

Regards,

Lisa Cumming

P6 Home Learning & News W/B 25th February

Hi all,

Homework this week:

Spelling – There’s a new spelling list this week plus loose and lose.

Writing500 words. The annual Radio 2 writing competition is upon us and closes on the 8th March so there’s not much time for us budding authors to get our stories written. I’d like this to be a flexible home/school task whereby children will get ample time in school to work on this and can  save their text onto USB sticks or I can email stories back and forth so that these can be worked on at home too.

Reading – Everyone will read for a minimum of 20 minutes per day in class.

Debates – We are going to have a 6 week block, developing debating skills. There will be 3 lots of 2 week topic blocks. In each topic block, the first week will involve some preparation work at home followed by the second week when the debate will take place. More information will follow on Tuesday.

Ski-ing –  Wednesday. Children should bring their ski-ing gear with them to change into at school before we leave on the bus (after break). Please note that children should bring a packed lunch as we return to school after the dining room has closed. Children have progressed quickly and are now enjoying being able to use the tow lift to go higher up the slope each week.

Peer Mediation – P6 are all set to go this week. Two people will be chosen each day to be Peer Mediators in the playground at lunch times for P1 –P6. The mediators have their script ready and have enjoyed practising through role play.

PETuesday  and Thursday

Finally, last week was Science Week. We had a workshop from Generation Science where we had to test which substances had the most fizzy and colourful reactions. We also learned a bit about the pH scale. Later on in the week, we did some experiments with water/oil and milk/ food colouring and washing up liquid. The children gave a lot of positive feedback about all their activities.

Thank you,

Sara Brunt

P2 Homework w.b. 25.2.19

Hello!

Well, we had such a fun science week! We had our ‘Ready, Teddy, Go!’ workshop on Monday where we learned all about forces. Then we have been working in teams for our STEM activities – designing an umbrella and an egg basket from a range of materials. P1 and P2 were put into groups on Wednesday and were given a range of materials to choose from to make an egg basket that would transport mini eggs safely down a zip line – this was A LOT of fun! To end the week, we created our own volcanoes on Friday and it was very exciting when the ‘lava’ overflowed everywhere.

We will be continuing to look at energy and electricity next week. Additionally, P1/2 will be doing a joint topic ‘Fairyland’ in the coming weeks.

Homework for the coming week:

Reading: Please check your child’s green reading record for the pages to be read that night. I am looking to incorporate more independent reading time in the class, so children are more than welcome to bring their own books in for this. If anyone has any pre-loved magazines/comics etc. that they no longer need then P2 would really appreciate these being added to the class library!

Spelling: This week we will be learning the ‘ay’ sound. The spelling list will contain words with this sound, for example, May, away, Monday. We are practising writing in cursive, please encourage your child to practise some of their words in cursive handwriting if they want to.

Maths: Children are continuing to learn about money with me and Mrs Wallace is moving onto learning about measure this term. This week the children will have a money worksheet to complete for homework. As this is an additional task the children will have until Monday to complete it. If you wish to do this over the weekend, please could you take it out of your child’s bookbag as I leave them in school on Friday so I can organize homework for the following week. Thank you.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend and I will see you on Monday!

Miss Lauren Waller

P7 News and Information 18.2.19

*SCIENCE WEEK* We kicked off science week with a workshop called Fizz, Boom, Bang – pupils created fizzy, colour changing solutions and can identify different pHs of solutions. Photos below

Pupils will be encouraged to work within set times, unfinished work is going to be sent home regularly.  We are looking at presentation of work as a lot of work is now profiled for High School.

Pupils MUST be learning how to tell times and know their times tables as quickly as they can answer “what is your name?”  Test your child, can they do this for all times tables? They NEED this skill for high school.

HOMEWORK Unfinished maths booklets have been sent home for Thursday,  Pupils also have the following maths and literacy work to complete.  Please check and sign.

P7 Homework 18.2.19-11g543x

Please can pupils also cover their jotters

In class we are learning about being kind and are reading the novel Wonder.  Pupils should also always have a book of their choie to read at home and in school.

A key theme emerging from parents night is about being nice to everyone – including on social media.  The majority of parents saying the class group chat is a cause for concern – may I remind you to regularly check your child’s phone as prank calling and cyber bullying are crimes.

P1 Homework : 18/02/19

Hello,

Welcome back, we hope you enjoyed the half term.

Homework for this week:

Reading:

This week we will be reading and having whole class learning activities based on the book ‘The day the crayons quit’.

We will be assessing the children’s progress with their reading and their recognition of the key words this week. Whilst we are doing this we will not be sending home reading books as homework.

Phonics: Please help your child complete the following sheets in their red phonics book:

Tuesday – ue – the sound heard in cue, queue, barbecue

Wednesday – er –  the sound heard in flowers and number

Thursday- ar – the sound heard in far, car, bar

Science Week:

For science week this week P1 will be investigating forces and electricity. We had a Ready, teddy, go! Science workshop on Monday where the children were predicting the affect of the following forces on a variety of objects:

Pushing, pulling, sinking, floating and friction.

Please can you help your child find a small toy to bring into school which shows one of the above forces for Tuesday. This should only be a small toy – a small car, a rubber duck, a small ball.

We will also be discussing the every day use of electricity and how to stay safe when using electrical appliances. Your child will have a worksheet to search for electrical items in the house. Please can you help them complete this by Friday.

Thank you,

Miss Maley, and Mrs Hunter
