PRIMARY 1 INFORMATION – 14th September 2020

Hi P1 parents,

We have a short couple of weeks as it is the September weekend this Friday/Monday so I hope you all have a lovely and restful time.

This week not everyone will have reading sent home but everyone will have Key words to practise – If you have misplaced these then you can download a set here – STAGE 1 AND 2 SIGHT WORDS

Pupils look at the shape of the word and memorise it, this is initial stages of reading and they will not be able to sound out all the words.

We are also learning numbers 1-10 – recognising numerals, amounts and words while counting out numbers and showing numbers on fingers etc.  Any reinforcement of this at home would be such a great support for them. Some examples of reinforcing number are below.

e.g. “How many are there here?”

“Can you show me 7 fingers? How about making 7 in another way?”

“Count out 6 grapes, are there 6 there? add one “how many are there now?”

Most of you have had a look on SeeSaw and I hope you have enjoyed seeing our learning journeys.

Thanks

Mrs Hinton

Hi all,

Reminder: School is closed this Friday (18th) and Monday 21st. Pupils return to school on Tuesday 22nd September.

Maths/Numeracy – Last week’s home learning sheet  revising  subtraction with exchange is due in on Wednesday. A new homework sheet will be sent home on Wednesday.

Reading – We have finished reading  Kensuke’s Kingdom but still have tasks to complete on this book in class.

Children have all been given a new reading book which I want to hear in class. Thus, no reading homework has been issued.

P5 Info – 14.9.20✨

Hi all,

🔬 We won’t be having science next Monday with Mrs Cumming but we will still be doing science with me in the afternoon, so there aren’t any timetable changes.

🏃🏼‍♂️Our P.E block  is on Wednesday afternoons, please ensure your child is dressed for P.E outside and brings a water bottle with water only. Thank you.

🧠 We will be having 10 minute brain breaks in the afternoons as they are longer than usual (2.5 hours). This is just an active break between our lessons in the afternoon to allow the children to move and feel ready for the rest of the afternoon. This could vary from a little jog outside, a GoNoodle video or some Yoga! Children can bring an extra snack in for this time as they may get hungry by this time, or they can leave something behind from their packed lunch.

🌟 We have introduced the ‘Zones of Regulation’ in our classroom and this is a great way to help myself and the class discuss our emotions and coping strategies. There are four zones, which you can find below, and there is no negative zone. For example, if you feel like you are in the red zone then this is not a bad thing as we can all feel multiple emotions throughout the day. The most important thing is we begin to think of strategies to help us self- regulate and bring ourselves closer to the green zone.

Homework 📝 (Set on Monday and to be returned on Friday)

Reading📚 – Pages to be read will be written into your child’s green reading record daily. Please sign beside the date to evidence it has been completed. Thank you!

Spelling✏️- A new list will be copied down on Monday morning.

Maths/Numeracy 🔢 – We have been learning how to read and write 6 digit numbers this week, so the worksheet on Google Classroom is a revision of this. If you have any issues with logging into Google Classroom, then please email me so I can fix this. I will hand out paper copies of the homework to those who cannot access GC.

School Holidays – Friday 18th September and Monday 21st September.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend,

Miss Lauren Waller

UPDATE ON SCHOOL PARKING September 2020

Due to recent events I have had a consultation with the Parking Officer that attended our school on Monday and Tuesday of this week. The following is the information gathered that I hope will help appease any frustration or upset that may have been caused and clarify a few points:-

First of all, the parking attendants have been sent by Midlothian Council as part of an Enforced Parking initiative that is being carried out at ALL Midlothian Schools. This is based primarily on SAFETY for all pupils and carers.

Also, there has been many instances where vehicles have not managed to gain access to the school for maintenance purposes, deliveries or refuse bin collections, due to cars being parked where they shouldn’t be i:e – double yellows, in front of bollards etc.
There have also been many complaints made about school transport/taxis not being able to park because of people parking in the bus drop of zone, keep clear zone and also the disabled spaces – where no blue badges have been displayed. This is unacceptable and has caused untold inconvenience and safety issues for a long time. Also, people that think it is acceptable to double park in front of cars parked in the bays, this is also an offense and extremely dangerous!
The parking restrictions are there for safety and to provide access to the school especially for Emergency Vehicles.

Anyone that has been unfortunate enough to have received a parking ticket, if a first offence can appeal it with Midlothian Council and have I been told this may be over-ruled as a goodwill gesture. However, persistent offences can be handed over to Sheriff Officers.
To clarify, parking on double yellows, bus drop off, keep clear zone, zig-zags and disabled spaces without the proper authorisation and any other obstruction can result in a instant ticket.

As a parent council we will be requesting that the red mono-blocked area ,that should be a drop off zone, be clearly marked and be exempt from double yellow line restrictions for the time being and that proper signage and road markings be put in place for this.
Disabled badges holders permitted to park on double yellows just the same as other streets and taxis doing a drop off/pick up are regarded the same as school transport.

In the meantime, I would urge all drivers to adhere to the restrictions as they would anywhere else and bear in mind CHILD SAFETY.
We are quite fortunate at our school to have free parking available on our driveway, Edgefield Road and surrounding areas, that other school do not and the limited parking available in the car park is due to us being a ‘Green School’ !

I hope this helps to alleviate any stress caused by recent events and that we can all do our bit to keep our children safe.
Kind Regards,
Lorna Kennedy
Parent Council Chair

P4 Homework & Update – September 2020

Homework

  • Spelling: pupils have written their new spelling words in their jotter on Wednesday this week. At home they should use:

LOOK   THINK/SAY   COVER   WRITE   CHECK

to write out their new spelling words three times in neat columns. They should also complete an activity card which will earn pupils 2 credit card points. An optional second activity may be completed for extra practice (and 1 credit card point) but is not mandatory. Completed spelling homework should be returned the following Tuesday to be marked and the next spelling pattern will be given for homework on Wednesday each week.

Thank you to those who have covered their child’s homework jotter using wrapping paper or old wallpaper to help keep it from ripping as it goes back and forth between home and school. All pupils have also been given a plastic folder to help with this transition.

  • Numeracy & Maths: please use the enclosed activity sheet to practise work which has been taught in class. Pupils can write straight onto this sheet so no need to copy into their jotters and this can be returned in their folder on Tuesday of the following week.
  • Reading: all pupils have been allocated a reading book which will go home twice per week to be read with an adult. It is extremely important that this activity is done at home as only through regular reading practice, will children improve this valuable life skill! Please ensure your child’s reading book is returned to school on the date detailed on the bookmark. It would also be helpful if you could initial this when you have heard your child read.
  • PE/Health & Wellbeing: this will be an outdoor activity where possible and to that end, can children please come dressed for outdoor PE on the allocated day each week (see dates below).  An outdoor kit will consist of trainers, jogging bottoms/leggings, t-shirt and outdoor showerproof jacket. We have no changing areas at present so children will wear their kit for the day.
Date P.E. / Health & Wellbeing Activity Day
    01.09.20 Tuesday
    10.09.20 Thursday
    15.09.20 Tuesday
    24.09.20 Thursday

Additional Information

Bird-feeders – P4 have really enjoyed making their individual bird-feeders and placing these around the school and the woods in the Bing. We will continue with outdoor learning throughout September as it has been a fantastic way to help pupils adjust to being back at school full-time.

P5 Info – 7.9.20

Hi all,

We had a great science lesson with Mrs Cumming on Monday afternoon and we have P.E./HWB with Mrs Duncan tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday). Please remember that children must come in to school on Wednesdays dressed for P.E. outside.

Homework 📝  (Sent out on Monday and to be returned by Friday)

Reading📚 – The pages/chapters to be read that night will be written in your child’s green reading record. Please sign beside this to evidence that homework has been completed. It is essential that children bring their reading book and records in every day as this is needed to participate in their reading group.

Spelling ✏️ – Children copied their new lists down on Monday. Please complete the list in a ‘look, cover, write, check’ format for two rows in cursive, before completing one spelling menu activity. This can be found on Google Classroom.

Maths/Numeracy 🔢 – This week I have uploaded a rounding activity for the class to complete on Google Classroom. If you cannot access Google Classroom then please do get in touch and I will try to sort this out.

Thank you,

Miss Lauren Waller
